Is Benji Carrying Too Much Weight?

Watching the chooseday night football game last night against souths from 04 was…interesting....to say the least

one thing that really stuck out to me was watching benji marshall play. He was playing center and everytime he got the ball created something. He was lightning fast and had that amazing step that made him a household name. He set up the first try for jason moodie with a brilliant run, bamboozaling step on luke macdougal, then offload to jason moodie. Early in the first half he made a break from nothing then set up moodie from a scrum play with some stunning footwork which should have won us the game.

He also looked to weigh about 37 kgs, seriously, i think hodgo would have bashed him.

Now i know marshall has been in great form over the last 12 months (the last 3 games excluded) and his ball playing has really gone to a new level, however i dont think his running game is anywhere near as deadly as it used to be. How long since we've seen that massive left foot step leave defender after defender stranded?

Marshall is currently weighing 89kgs. Now i know he used to be a defensive liability and that this is why he has bulked up, but at what cost is this? Benji has just turned 25, there is no reason he shouldnt still have lightning speed and the reflexes of a cat on a hot tinned roof.

Benji isnt ever going to be a brad fittler type of 5/8 who runs at the line and uses his strength to get over, his line breaks are made from speed and footwork. Taking this into account is benji perhaps carrying a bit _too_ much weight? Personally i would to see him slim down to around the 83/84kg mark. If he does this and it doesnt work then by all means stack it back on, but i really miss the sight of him leaving defenders clutching at thin air as he whizzed past them.

He needs to take the line on.. He hasn't been doing it.

Also should get back to what he did first few games of the season and have a hit up in the first set.. Seemed to go good after that 👍

Cue C_t….

Marshall development to be the Man is an ongoing process.......

Sheens built the team around him and Robbie.....With all that money and time invested ...I can't see Sheens changing anytime soon....

Nice memories though.....

dont get me wrong, i sure as hell dont want him moved from 5/8, that should never happen

i just think it might be beneficial to his running game if he trimmed down a bit

In 04 he would of been what…. 19?
I read an article beginning of the year and he said he actually dropped 7 - 8 kg's off the top of my head..he also said he feels as agile as he did in 05.. So this benji being a lard ass and being too slow is rubbish.

Benji's ideal weight is where he is now. He actually bulked up to over 90kg last year but realised that was too heavy and lost a few kilos during last season to improve his speed and agility. Benji isn't carrying anywhere near enough fat on him to drop down to 83kg, he would lose too much muscle doing so. And he did say at the start of this season that he has never done as much running during any pre-season as what he and the team have done under Folkes.

He needs the bulk for protection. You have to remember he is the no1 target in our team. Coaches have big units targeting him all day in both attack and defense. For him to survive the next five years he needs that bulk, yes it would be nice to have the lighting speed back but at what cost?? I think he could delevope into a bit of a Freddy Fitler style no6 over the rest of his playing days

the bulking up has protected him from sustaining any more serious injuries, or so it seems that way
anyway i would think he still has the speed and footwork to beat most players

just because you have more bulk on you doesnt mean it stops you from getting injured….look at hodgo..he took a thousand big hits and lived to play the next week! look at payton and galloway...they are big boys and are injury prone

Just read benji has only 3 line breaks this year. On average 1 every 3 games.

We can all agree to disagree but this validates my point to me.
