Many pundits said there’s not much chance that the Tigers will have the success of the bulldogs last year and it will take time…well, it’s happening. We have a good administration. Benji took a huge risk (on his career) backing Galvin last year, and while he showed promise, he wasn’t winning us games. We also had a bunch of other young players in the team that were getting used to playing 80 mins against men, so lumping the lack of success on Marshall is ridiculous.
Comparing Benji to a Ciraldo - You can listen to Ciraldo and know he’s a good coach. But talk of systems, processes kpi’s - people assume they are a good coach due to use of this overly complex language, and when they don’t use it they’re not; what’s I’ve found is that people that use this language robotically often don’t know as much as the person that can communicate in simple terms. Fundamentally, coaching a team is about getting a bunch of players to believe and play together: that can be done in a number of different ways. In my opinion, Benji has been given a way worse situation than Ciraldo - the team was worse, the culture was worse and there’s no Gould to help build pathways. Galvin is too inexperienced to make a decision in Benjis ability to coach. If he thinks doing an extended wrestling session with a bunch of forwards with 15-20kg on him is best for his development at 19, then he really is immature and not looking at the bigger picture.
Everything is moving in the right direction at the Tigers, and while the Eels have had moderate success, they still haven’t won a comp in forever, regardless of how many players they’ve stolen. They have had a horrendous run of coaches, with the exception of Brad Arthur, who they sacked without a replacement. Keep in mind their catchment is almost as big as the Tigers and they haven’t developed any decent halves. If access starts in the boardroom, they are a ways off.
With all this in mind, there’s no guarantee that if he goes to the Eels it will go well. I won’t be rooting for his failure, but it will be a huge we told you so.
Back on the Tigers - we all know that these things take time, Galvin didn’t want to give it time but he’s willing to go to a club that’s further behind in its rebuild?
I think the murmurs that he didn’t really gel with Luai and team are true, and that would explain the backlash From the players who were accomodating to Galvin, only to have him say they weren’t good enough. He’s extremely fit and for that reason wants to play both sides, chime in where he wants etc, and while that may make a moderately successful team, I’m not convinced it will win comps, nor am I convinced Moses will be happy with that.
Anyways, we’re moving on but still baffled by this decision.
What I do know from yesterday’s presser is that Benji is the real deal and so is our CEO. Whether it’s via our pathways or a recruit, we will fill the hole and we will be successful. It’s just a matter of time.
