Well, it's always a topic of conjecture.
Good captain ??
And begs the question, can a captain of a wooden spooner team ever be seen as a good captain.

I was reading this morning an article interviewing Ange Postecoglou in light of Spurs last 2-3 loss and the onfield response in the 2nd half of that game, and his response as coach in the time since.
And I thought this part has merit when considering the captain's role of our team too:

"When people talk about leaders they think it’s the captain. But that’s where you fall into the trap because it might be the captain who is having a bad day," said the former Celtic boss.

“Leadership can be shown by the youngest player out there. I keep saying it. Every individual has the capacity to show leadership. Whether that’s on the football field, in your workplace, wherever, it could be the most inexperienced person who does an act that inspires others.

“Leadership is in that moment taking ownership of something."

This is part of our coaches' task, to empower all our players to do their part, to lift as needed .....
That is what a team is all about.

I believe that this is a really important topic and one that is particularly undervalued at the tigers.
The top teams have a terrific group of leaders, guys that show the way by example and unwavering effort on and off the field.
Not just 1 or 2 guys but consistently 5 or 6. They almost challenge and shame the rest, especially the less experienced, to play to their standards. They are uncompromising in their insistence.
As a squad we lack these guys, our leaders have been underwhelming (a fact that I believe Benji has made clear to them) and wanting.
Luai and hopefully Bird will add leadership to our group but I believe we need more so fingers crossed.

I reckon we have a few hurdles to deal with before we can start to have a team on the park with 13 leaders.
For leadership behaviours to grow we need to have trust in each other throughout the organisation.
We need open and honest communication, people saying what’s on their mind with no misunderstanding of their motives.
We need the players to know the strengths and weaknesses of each other, so that they can acknowledge those strengths and help improve those weaknesses.
I like the last minute message Ivan Cleary told his players as they ran out of the shed.. “remember, there’ll be 5 or 6 of you who will win this game for us today, be one of the 5 or 6!”

He said The Most important thing above all else for Penrith as an indicator of Success is Fitness.

It underpins everything they do as a team.
If you’re not fit or not fit for purpose then you shouldn’t have a nrl contract. If a player isn’t fit, I don’t care who or how good he is, then he doesn’t make the 17.
