Lockyer v Johns

Who gets the nod? for me i have to go with Locky. I was thinking tonight as good as Johns was, i can't remember him making as many match winning plays when the game was on the line as Lockyer has. Lockyer seems to have a knack of just getting the job done when it matters most. Also i think his record in Origin was far superior to Joey's. Joey definatley didn't dominate in Origin. He was often compared to Lewis, but even though i wasn't old enough to remember the king, from what i've been told, the King had it all over him in Origin, and i would say Lockyer did aswell

thoughts?

Definitely Lockyer over Johns
Lockyer is a great back up support player ,faster , more durable and a never stopped fighting with the Qld spirit
Johns was a better goal kicker ,touch better defender
Most other areas pretty equal
Lewis beats both of them imo
Lewis is the best footballer I have laid eyes since watching the game since 1974

Fairly even at club level - Locky probably just shades him
Locky owns him at both SOO and Test level

Therefore….Darren Lockyer > Andrew Johns. Pretty simple equation really.

the only thing better about locky is he was faster earlier in his career. joey had much better defense and had more ability to break a tackle using strength. also a much better goal kicker

Sadely, this will always be a State vs State argument…

I always percieved Lewis to be better than Johns, but I feel Lockyer finally passed the great Wally Lewis last year and this year.

Lockyer is up there right next to Norm Proven & Wally Lewis in my eyes.

I dont even think its close. Johns eats Lockyer alive.

I rate Lockyer, and i dont mean any disrespect to him, but talk of him possibly being the best player ever are laughable.

He's a great player and future hall of famer, but he isnt in Andrew Johns' league.

People often throw up the stats of Lockyer to support him being better, but stats dont always tell the true story.

Put it this way, if i had the choice of having Lockyer or Johns play their career at the tigers, id choose Johns everytime.

Johns was a far better defender and goal kicker, however:

They are both on par with their kicking and passing games and Darren is a far superior ball runner.

Locky has dominated at ALL levels of the game for years. I can remember Joey having a few good SOO games but cant recall him ever doing anything special at International level. Who will ever forget that Kangaroo tour where Locky took a team of second stringers to England and starred in all games to bring home the trophy? Johnsy never achieved anything like that in his career - mostly due to injury but the fact does remain….At International level, Locky is rated one of Australias best ever fullbacks and 5/8ths you cant say the same for Joey as a halfback. At this level, Stuart, Sterling and Langer were all better players....and I would say arguably the same at SOO level.

Darren has also dominated at all three levels in two specialist positions. He won premierships, Origin series and Test matches at fullback then was moved to 5/8th and achieved exactly the same thing.

Its hard to compare but the way I see it is who do I fear most? And as a Tigers fan I always feared Johns more the Lockyer. He had the ability to complete dominate the opposition and I think that was shown by winning 3 Dally M's.
I thought Johns was a better defender and he had the ability to create something out of nothing. He'd also develop his skills such as the different types of kicks he could employ.
I think their passing and running games are similar.

I dont support the argument that Lockyer has won more Premierships, etc. Lockyer has played in a great Brisbane side his entire career. Johns was in a great team for the first half of his career and a mediocre one for the 2nd half.

Johns teams were no slouches

This debate might recieve one final chapter if Darren plays this Friday night and gets a win!!!

Yes we know that the Manly scum are going to get a cheap shot on that cheekbone whenever they get a chance

And so they should test it…. I would question Wayne Bennetts decision to not run 2 big blokes at him in the last 10 minutes on Saturday. I couldnt believe they didnt try?!

Put into context that Newcastle had a lower winning percentage without Buderus rather than without Johns also.

The same stupidity of not running Gasnier at Utai all night Watto.. After Gaz ridiculed him when we first met this year…
Sorry to drift from topic....
I really haven't really ever seen the "Mastercoach" in Wayne Bennett...
His Man-Management skills are second to none i'll agree, But he hasn't ever really had to structure much cattle-wise....
Both teams he has coached have always had an abundance of talent across the park.
And the Dragons myth is finally busted this year with them winning 4/15 of thier final games. I think all the hype and the scare tactics have led teams to Believe the Dragons were unbeatable for the last 3 years and when their defense held out, Teams just succumbed thinking the same old same old. I sometimes see it in a player... A guy will burst onto the scene and tear teams to shreds, A year or 2 later... Teams will be all over him and the impact is minimal (Daniel Mortimer springs inevitabley to mind) I think it took far to long for the Comp to realise the dragons were VERY beatable... And how to do it. The loss of Smith and Big Nev helped for sure. Even with Bennett at Knights now... They still have a great team, And were not far off the mark this year.... They have recruited well so in turn will be a force.
I'd have liked to see the "Mastercoach" Take on the Sharks or Rabbits and achieve something.... Then I will believe!!
As for Locky or Johns.... I think best way to sum it up.... Is Joey was smarter (More clinical in breaking oposition), But Locky is Classier... He just does all the little things VERY WELL, Always following the ball and is very, very consistant.

No issues if they do it legally Watto
But you and I and everyone else on here on the forum knows what they are like
There will be cheap shots everywhere and that's what I don't agree with
And I wouldn't agree if the Tigers did it either

Johns could do things I've never seen anyone do. He was a natural. This guy made everyone around him play 10x better, his influence on his team was unbelievable. Lockyer to me is an amazing player and one of the best I have seen. But Johns eclipses everyone, he is to rugby league what Bradman is to cricket.

Fitler & Johns > Wally Lewis & Lockyer

… Benji will be better though.
