LOTE'S ALL CLASS AT WESTS TIGERS

Lote Tuqiri may be big in stature and name but as far as first impressions go, the man is class with a capital C.

Just two hours after arriving in Sydney at 8.30am from a long and delayed journey from London and with little sleep, Lote was happy to front a media conference at Wests Tigers headquarters at Concord Oval leaving his wife and two boys at home to settle in.

It is very rare for elite athletes to front a media conference after such a long flight but Lote did it with a smile. And he did it for 2 hours!

That’s Lote.

He was amazed as to how many journalists, photographers and camera crews were present. Like his former rugby team-mate Wendell Sailor, Lote enjoys the media hype - at times.

Proudly sitting between Coach Tim Sheens and Captain Robbie Farah (who came in on his day off), Lote was officially welcomed to the club by CEO Stephen Humphries, who took the opportunity to praise Lote on his professionalism.

That’s the key word – professionalism.

The floor was opened to journalists from the daily papers, radio stations and television networks. In front of Lote were countless tape recorders and photographers who continually snapped away. It was the biggest media conference for any Wests Tigers player in the club's history.

One by one, Lote picked each question off. And he did it with a smile. Honest, open answers. There were no standard rugby league clichés from Lote.

He also showed a good sense of humour. When asked how he feels about Manly stating they would test him out after seven years away from the game, Lote smiled, The dual international talked it up a bit but confidently backed his own ability in saying 'let them'.

One question that brought a laugh was addressed to Sheens. Asked how how exciting it was for the Wests Tigers to have a marquee player who could finish the plays off and score, Sheens paused before stating "I’ll tell Taniela you said that”.

Sheens was also protective in saying he had the final right to determine whether Tuqiri plays against Manly this Monday at the Sydney Football Stadium, depending on how the winger feels over the next few days. Sheens anticipates he will play.

Following the press conference, it was time for the traditional ‘one on one’ interviews with journalists and tv reporters. Each were given a short time. As to how many crews there were, Channel Nine and Fox Sports sent two crews and reporters, such was the strong interest in Tuqiri.

In between Lote posed for more photos and was joined in passing the ball for the cameras by new team-mate in prop Keith Galloway, who like Tuqiri, plays his 100th NRL game on Monday night. Galloway took time out from doing a first aid course to meet his new winger.

It was then time for more interviews and more similar questions. Once completed, his final duty was to try on his new club suit to wear on Monday night.

It was a big day for Tuqiri but you could sense the excitement in his voice. He can’t wait to start playing with his new team-mates. And Wests Tigers members and supporters across the globe can’t wait either!

Welcome to Wests Tigers, Lote Tuqiri!

Good read.

Whats with Sheens saying he has the final right on whether Lote plays on Monday or not though?

He has absolutely no choice but to play Lote now, a LOT of tickets would have been sold based on the fact that Lote was named… If the Tigers had any doubt about Lote playing what-so-ever then they should not have named him in the side at all...

It would be much more acceptable to have Lote as a last minute inclusion than to advertise his return and then pull him out, that would be looked upon verrrrrrry poorly, Lote in this circumstance is no ordinary selection, people will be basing decisions and forking out money based on him being named at #2 this week.

He looks much fitter than he did before he left for England.

I remember thinking he was looking more like a front rower than a back, but in that photo he looks the goods.

Rubbish Zaibatsu. Coaches cant be restricted on player selections because of ticket sales. Sheens, at this stage, intends to use Lote but rightly noted there is a chance he wont play depending upon how he pulls up.

I agree. He'll play. Sheens is actually being decent by saying there is no guarantee that he will play. Anybody who purchases tickets is now aware that there is a chance he wont play.

Which is why foresight would be needed.

In any other circumstance it wouldn't be a concern at all, but given that this is Lote's FIRST game back in rugby league after 7 years and the intense media hype surrounding it, any administrator worth his salt would clearly see that this is going to be a massive drawcard for fans and advertising it and then taking it away would be a very poor move by the club.

If it was his 2nd game back, not a problem, but this is a very special circumstance… I'm sure they are smart enough to realise this and wouldn't have named him unless he was 100% destined to play.

even 1% of doubt should have seen him be named as a late inclusion instead.

He'll play, surely. Looks great in that jersey!!

Saw Tuqiri on channel 10 sport as well as channel 9 just now, and he definitely looks the goods in the Tigers jersey. Looks fit and sounds keen. Hopefully he gets out there on Monday and holds his own, because he'll only get better as the season goes.

Channel 9 also mentioned that the Tigers have turned themselves around financially too, compared to this time last year, the Tigers are $1 million better off.

You can't ever be 100% sure that a player is going to play until they run out onto the field. Players even get injured in the pregame warmup.

People know Tuqiri has just stepped off the plane today. They realise there may be some chance he will need to pull out when they buy their ticket. All Sheens can do now is name his expected team, which he has done. The football gods will decide who actually plays on Monday.

Afraid I disagree in this circumstance, this is no ordinary situation, any doubt at all should have seen him not named then be included on game day if he turns out to be ok.

Advertising his return to league and then pulling him out would be farcical in this circumstance.

Or…Fitzhenry to Wing....Brown to bench who is on standby along with Lazarus for Benji...

Would be farcical if he had spent some time hear already but with Lote not being in the country that long it's a legitamate excuse. In saying that, I wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't play him and I wouldn't be surprised if he has already said behind closed doors he wont play him. If you look it at this way, Manly have been distracted by Lote's inclusion into the team and plan to attack him. If Lote doesn't play, then what? Along with that, this has been the biggest media exposure the club has got since September 2005, imagine how happy the current and any prospective sponsor would be at the moment. Regardless of whether he plays or nor, Humphreys and Sheens have played the media perfectly.

Ballwork tomorrow will indicate how many wingers we have in the frame for the Monday night game. I will personally be very surprised if he does not play.

If the Fonz is paying a player good money , he plays them, no matter what form they are in.

Lote said on Fox Sports he wants to and expects to play.He wouldnt risk his rep or credibility by playing if he didnt feel well enough physically. As for positional play etc he's gonna have to remember on the run.

Lote will play

The club is expecting a massive crowd, easily over 20k, for this match pretty well based off Lote being there.
Can you imagine the flack they will get if they don't?
There is too much hype, too much media buzz.
The club will play lote and hope for a win because above all it will mean more **CHING CHING CHING**

Yeah for the WSFS…..Don't they pay us to play there regardless of the crowd...?

Entry Prices there are more than Traditional grounds....

So don't they get the gate?

Lote's Bums on seats will help Cambo and Leichhardt...that's for sure....

Don't quote me on this, but I recall someone saying that they do get a percentage of gate takings. I don't know if a certain PAX has to be met or what. Regardless, they would be stupid not to. The guy was on fire in the UK and he's playing on the wing; there isn't that much of an adjustment.

Besides, what's the worst thing that could happen?

Yeah just like what he did with O'hara…. Oh wait...

O'Hara was the obvious exception as he found it hard to com back from injury. Halatau, Collis, Morris etc. Once they were out of contract they were gone.
