Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire says he was most pleased with his side's ability to keep fighting against the Newcastle Knights after staging a late comeback to clinch a tense 24-20 win.

Leading 18-8 midway through the second half, Wests Tigers soon found themselves behind with 10 minutes to go as the Knights rallied in Mitchell Pearce's 300th game — only to again take the lead through David Nofoaluma to clinch the win.

For Maguire, his side's ability to keep coming at the Knights pleased him most.

"I thought the way they came together when we faced adversity was the most pleasing part," Maguire said of his side's gritty four-point win.

I saw today that we can be a much-improved team with what's within this group.

"I was really pleased with their attitude during the week. They had a great attitude about what we'd spoken about throughout the pre-season with what we wanted to be and I thought that came out in today's game.

"They fought to the end, stuck together and looked after each other and that paid off in the back end of the game."

Maguire had particular praise for halfback Luke Brooks and fullback Daine Laurie after the pair were instrumental in their side's win.

"Luke had plenty going on around him this week but I thought he did a great job to put that aside and focus on what he needed to do for the team," he said.

"I thought the team rallied around him too in the right way; they worked hard in attack and allowed him to get on the front foot to kick in better positions.

"You've got to do that as a team and they worked hard together.

"Daine's a really good kid too — he just loves playing footy," Maguire added.

"I think he's really growing as a player too. We only had him for a month before the start of the season and those combinations in the spine are growing. It's a big part of us and I'm sure he'll continue to grow into a very good player."

At least half of the players in this team are still new to each other. Confidence and combination is what this team has needed. They took the first real step yesterday.

That was one of the most complete performances we’ve had for a long long time. Tigers of old would’ve found a way to lose that game. Well done

Agree. However there were still some attempts to throw the game away. At the end of 80 mins, with 4 tries each , it was the goal kickers who decided the winner. A huge turn around. Adam nailed it.

A year ago if someone told told me we would be at 100% goal kicking coming into round 4 I would have laughed in their face.

Plenty ugly but also very tenacious.

Eliminate those few dumb choices, few bad offloads, few costly missed tackles and it can be a very competitive side.

Best thing was coming back to clinch it. We failed so many times last year against better teams because our heads dropped at key moments. We had Parra, Penrith and Raiders all under control last year and choked.

Second best thing breaking the 26 point streak

I thought we had found another way when Tyson F scored. It was a huge effort to find away to win especially with Sutton's refereeing and been in a hostile venue

Im only going to say this one more time....
We have a very good mix of youth and experience within this team and more talent being developed...
The team needs to train hard as they are doing and to get to know one another as well...
Once our spine play more together and have stability week in week out, they will become a more crisp unit..
Yesterday showed us what can happen if each player does their job correctly, bar minor errors and play for each other...
The team will become more confident as the weeks go by,Madge is gradually working out the fors and against each player has and is working on their strengths...Stef,Mikaele,JoeO,Garner etc will get better as a forward pack as well...Blore should give them a lift when he returns..

sidenote...JTJ needs to be given more ball,I can see him getting back to his best in the next couple of games...I think he still has a niggling injury and only played yesterday because Joey was dropped (and rightly so )....

Umm Leilua needs early ball Roberts needs more ball..Nofo needs to run umm.. forwards need to go forward..forwards need to pass the ball more ..Brooks needs to run more ..Brooks needs to kick less

i'm glad Madge is the coach..

The defence was still a concern at times with players being isolated and no one covering on the inside. We still have a lot of work to do in scrambling in this regard.

Attack looked better but the passing game can still be improved - JTJ needs more ball and I'd like to see Laurie lurking around the middle of the field supporting the forwards - although I note our offload count was abysmal yesterday. If it gets to the point where Simpkins gets a run, we need support off him due to his offload ability.

Vinnie, I’m finding it hard to believe too.
How did they manage to turn this around? We’ve gone from nobody kicking at above 65% to having 2 kickers on 100% ??
Do they have a new kicking coach?

Esan who tells em what to do and they do the opposite

Just watched the full replay and a win is a win, but geez we only just managed to stumble over the line.

Knights were 7 key players down and made 18 errors of which we only forced 6.

Shining lights were Daine, Jacob, Adam and Nofa. Luke also played with more confidence.

Biggest should’ve, could’ve why didn’t he? moment was Mybe bombing the try on the line in the 75th min.

If that’s our best we’ll get flogged by Parra.
