MARSHALL AND MILLER SHOW SUPPORT FOR CCIA
19/07/2011 10:35:46 AM

Wests Tigers players Benji Marshall and Jacob Miller threw their support behind research into children’s cancer in visiting the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia at the University of New South Wales in Randwick on Monday.

Both players spent some time with 4-year-old Isla Murdoch and 10-year-old Hunter Jelicich, children who have suffered from the disease. Fortunately, they have both been given a clean bill of health however, they will need to be closely monitored over the coming months.

It was the second time Hunter had met Benji after his visit to a Wests Tigers training session earlier this year.

Both players were then given a brief tour of the lab to give them a better understanding of the work involved in treating children's cancer and the testing work involved to find a cure. There were two machines, both worth around $800,000 each, that are two of only a four machines in the country. Such is their effectiveness, it’s said to complete a year’s work for one scientist in just one hour.

Benji and Wests Tigers announced their support for CCIA earlier this year. In March, Marshall held a “Footy Rocks” dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel that raised around $250,000.

Speaking at the CCIA building, Marshall explained how important it was to find a cure for children’s cancer.

“I’m a strong supporter of CCIA and the work they’re doing. It’s not right that some children and their families have to suffer from a disease like this,'' Marshall said.

"Therefore it’s important to generate as much awareness as possible and encourage people to donate to a worthy cause."

This Saturday night, Wests Tigers and Benji are helping CCIA raise more money which will go towards further testing and medical advancements.

Spectators will be encouraged to buy “TRY” cards which will be given out for any gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to CCIA.

Meriton and 2XU have pledged $1000 each per Wests Tigers try scored on the night.

CCIA volunteers will also be at the ground to promote their charity and distribute information to fans on how to donate.

Marshall’s jersey will also be auctioned off on weststigers.com.au after the match for fans to bid on.
