Marshall tipped for 2012 Dally M

Fri, Feb 03, 2012 - 9:00 AM

Benji Marshall has been named the favourite to take out the 2012 Dally M award.

Fan will get a chance to watch the two favorites for the 2012 Dally M Award go head to head on Saturday night in the Harvey Norman All Stars match at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

Benji Marshall has been named the favourite to take out the 2012 Dally M award, with Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston and Eels duo Jarryd Hayne and Chris Sandow also believed to be in the running to take out the NRL's highest individual honour.

Marshall is a $13 favourite to win the medal with TAB Sportsbet, who say the five-eighth's durability will stand him in good stead.

"Marshall finished strongly last year and is more valuable to the Tigers than ever before given the departure of Robert Lui," TAB Sportsbet's Matt Jenkins said.

"He has only missed one game since round 8, 2009, which ensured he opened the man to beat."

Thurston, Sharks captain Paul Gallen and reigning Dally M medallist Billy Slater are also among the favourites, while new Parramatta teammates Hayne and Sandow are rated $26 chances.

"Daly Cherry-Evans is expected to be a marked man in 2012 but he is still Manly’s best hope of claiming the award," Jenkins said.

"Newcastle’s big buy Darius Boyd will be crucial to their success but Kurt Gidley rates a better chance to win the Dally M."

Dally M Award – the top contenders with TAB Sportsbet
Benji Marshall (Wests Tigers) - $13
Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys) - $15
Billy Slater (Storm) - $17
Paul Gallen (Sharks) - $21
Cooper Cronk (Storm) - $23
Jarryd Hayne (Eels) - $26
Cameron Smith (Storm) - $26
Chris Sandow (Eels) - $26
Josh Dugan (Raiders) - $26
Daly Cherry-Evans (Sea Eagles) - $26
Kurt Gidley (Knights) - $26
Glenn Stewart (Sea Eagles) - $34
Ben Barba (Bulldogs) - $34
Darius Boyd (Knights) - $34
Robbie Farah (Tigers) - $34
Todd Carney (Sharks) - $34
Scott Prince (Titans) - $41
Jamie Soward (Dragons) - $51

How they can even preempt something like this, before a ball is even kicked, is beyond ridiculous. Makes me think it's rigged.

Anyone who lays money down is just as crazy. Really quite stupid considering the length of the season and the myriad of variables.

I don't like betting on anything where the time to play is over a month, but out of that lot the best bet would be Smith @ $26\. He will always poll well when the Storm win (which will happen a lot again this season).

but he has to compete with Billy and Cronk every week

the odds compensate the early time in year for the bet, tough betting with such big fields

The Prince figure can't be right can it Maybe $441 on last seasons form Especially seeing that Robbie Farah is on $34

The two I would be seriously looking at with the money on offer would be Gallen @ $21 and DCE @$26

If all the stories about a particular player and his DUI is true he odds should start to quadruple soon

Carney at $34 is a standout for me.

Agreed, if Carney can keep it together this season, they're great odds.

Would like to see Benji or Farah finally snare it. Both have come close and deservedly so.

The Dally Ms are nothing more than a popularity contest. There are just too many coincidences in the final rounds of vote counting, when numbers go behind closed doors.
I've found multis to be good value if you can jag a few margins.

The 3 of them more often than not will take the 6 points between them every Melbourne in, Smith will probably poll a bit better when they lose than the other 2.

Glenn Stewart is another who has good odds about him, he would have won it for sure last year had he not had his dust up with Blair and lost 9 points.

I think the most blatent example was the last round in 05 when Joey got 3 points in a game the Knights lost to the Dragons. That was during Joey's comeback when he was MOTM almost every week and had everybody talking about the Dally M's.He didn't win the thing, but it was just proof the DT were doing all they could to get him over the line, because a Joey fairytale would sell a few papers wouldn't it? . So put 2 and 2 together, there was nothing odd about him getting 3 points in the last game at all :unamused:

And on Benji. I'd never hold my breath on him winning the Dally M. We just have to remember who gives out the votes. The very publication that slanders his name at every oppurtunity they get

And thats why Gallen at $21 looks very juicy odds Rarely injured very consistant and maybe has a team that might make the top 8
