Mebourne Storm's "punishment"

Does anyone else think that it really wasn't that much of a punishment? The NRL "stripped" them of the titles in '07 and '09, but so what? We all saw them win those grand finals. It's not like you can erase that. The league fined them over $1.5million, but wouldn't News Limited have just absorbed that? They also made it impossible for them to win the premiership in 2010, but that only cancels out one of their grand final wins.

The worst aspect, though, is that they cheated the cap by over $3million and yet, here we are in 2011, and they still have the trio of Smith, Slater and Cronk running things. These three, along with Inglis, would surely have been the ones who were benefitting the most from the cap cheating. Yet only one of them is no longer playing there.

The fact is, all these other players they've had to let go were expendable and easily replaced. The "spine" of the team is still there, leading them around. I don't buy this argument that Bellamy had performed a miracle this year, because with the exception of Inglis and a bunch of role players it's not really that different a team to the one that won the '09 grand final.

In fact, these are the players from that '09 grand final who are still with the team and playing tonight (I'll include Cronk, as he's injured):

Slater, Nielsen, Cronk, Smith, Blair, Hinchcliffe. They also had Sika Manu back then, but he was injured during the season and missed the grand final. That's a pretty high turnover, I guess, but like I said, besides Inglis none of the players they lost were of the irreplacable type. And those players they still have are all amongst their best.

By cheating the cap, Melbourne gained an unfair advantage on the field. Wouldn't it have made more sense to punish them in a way that would make it equally difficult for them to compete on the field? Say, reducing their cap by $1million for '11, '12 and '13? Maybe that's too unfair. But just looking at them now, it doesn't seem like they paid much for cheating.

The punishment was very fair in my opinion, the reason they are going so well now is Bellamy is a fantastic coach. Look how many average players he buys and turns them into quality players. He knows how to motivate players, and has them playing an effective style of football. From 2007-09 the only rep player they bought was Brett Finch (unless I've forgotten someone, Crocker came earlier) all the other rep players they have are ones they produced.

if they're under the cap now then theres no problem

x 2 They have got the worst punishemnt they can cop
No one will ever trust them again and if they go $1 over the cap the world will come crashing down on them
They will lose more players some guys have had to take pay cuts to stay
Losing Blair next season there will be more to follow
Totally agree Alien They got their just desserts and if they are legally under cap I'm fine with it

That sounds like sour grapes tf4l….

They lost 2 premierships and possibly a 3rd last year. They then played the majority of last year for nothing only to lose a heap of players at seasons end. Despite this they have blooded some awesome young blokes who have hit the ground running.

The fact that they are playing so well this year is a remarkable effort. They deserve the minor premiership as they have been superb nearly all year.

They deserve to be our runners up for the Telstra premiership as well.

No problems mate - go the Storm ! Good on them - 24K tonight at the game ground record - they did the time and they paid for the crime. How good is their coach to get them where they are today after offloading so many players and bringing new players in.

We were pathethic after it was annouced we lost a few players next year nothing like they went through recently so have no issues where they sit on the table.

If they win the comp instead of us I will have no problems and be grateful of seeing such a turnaround.

the only bad thing i can think of is some of the players playing at melbourne now might not be there if they didnt go over the salary cap to start off with

just like the bulldogs, they got them there illegally. got caught, managed to get under the cap.. the rest is history.

if they are under the cap now its fine to me. they have turned a bunch of no-names into good players this season. players like Jesse Bromwich and Gareth Widdop were unheard of last year but have been sensational this year. i think they have been great this year they have earned my respect.

widdop played 4 games for england last year

he was my dreamteam fullback until he got injured!

Damn talk about harsh. what they've done this yr is unbelievable, and they deserve credit, instead of the constant rubbish of still being labelled 'cheats'. Yes they cheated but they payed the price and served their time. As Stryker said, sounds alot like sour grapes

and FYI, the players they lost last yr included Inglis, Finch, Brett White, Jeff Lima, Ryan Hoffman and Aiden Toleman. Thats almost half their team and they've been replaced by virtual no-names and you don't think they deserve credit for that? :wtf

Agreed, if they are under the cap this year and have managed to achieve then good luck to them. It is true that they have managed to keep the 'spine' of the team, which is the best if not one of the best in the comp but that spine have had to work through publically humiliating times and gell with many new team mates, some of whom other clubs didn't want. As stryker says 'They deserve to be our runners up for the Telstra premiership as well.'
