New coach Mick Potter key to Tim Moltzen revival at Wests Ti

TIM Moltzen believes new Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter is the man to unlock his full potential as a NRL fullback this season.

Potter made more than 200 first grade appearances for Canterbury, St George and the Western Reds as a fullback in a career that saw him crowned Dally M Medallist on two occasions.

Veteran coach Brian Smith once said Potter had taught him all about fullback play when he coached him at the Dragons and Moltzen is now benefiting from that experience.

The 24-year-old's versatility has seen him play at centre, five-eighth and halfback since his debut in 2008 but it's the No.1 jersey he's targeting in 2013.

"I've worked really hard this season fixing up a few things at fullback as that's ideally where I want to play,'' Moltzen said.

"Mick put it in my hands and asked me where I saw my best position and I've said fullback is where I feel best suited.

"He's brought in plenty of things that will help my game and pointed out things I need to work on in positional play and where to be at certain times, it's been really good.

"It's up to me now to be consistent and show him what I can do.''

Moltzen was touted as a future representative player when he burst onto the scene in 2008, but a serious knee injury sustained in round five in 2010 kept him out for the season.

A solid 2011 campaign led to Dragons announcing they'd secured his services for the 2012 season, only for Moltzen to back out of the deal and remain with the Tigers.

The situation created a bitter row between the two joint-venture clubs at boardroom level and Moltzen admits the furore affected his form.

This was demonstrated in the round three clash between the sides at Kogarah, won 36-12, by the Dragons with the home crowd letting him know what they thought of his decision in no uncertain terms.

"It's something I've moved on from and don't want to dwell on it,'' he said.

"But mentally I am in a lot better shape than I was last year and have put all those things behind me.

"I am just focused on impressing a new coach and having a better year.''

Moltzen will have to stave off competition for the custodian role from youngster James Tedesco.

Tedesco was thrown in for his debut in round one against Cronulla last year, but his season lasted just 30 minutes when he ruptured his cruciate ligament when running back the ball.

The 20-year-old will play his first game since the injury in Friday's trial game against Penrith in Bathurst and admits he excited and slightly nervous.

"It's exciting to be playing, but there is a bit of nerves there as well,'' Tedesco admitted.

"I had a bit of setback and needed another arthroscopy on the knee so I didn't get back to pre-season until December.

"Obviously I want to play first grade, but at the moment I'll be happy to get some games in NSW Cup and then build from there.''

If Moltzen proves himself I am happy for him to start the season at the back.

If not Tedesco in

With Moltzen and Tedesco vying for the fullback spot this is a win - win situation for West Tigers. If he starts the season on a confident note Moltzen is a more than capable fullback.

Has the makings aof a very good footballer but his on field body language and confidence - at times- needs work

Tim - its the coaches and captains job to give the team mates a spray, when youre (C) you can do it to your hearts content, at the current moment youre a rookie fullback and it does you no favours when fans see this

The most interesting thing for me in all that was tedesco saying he will be in nsw cup if not first grade.

With so much talent in the 20s could tedesco, sironen and nofoaluma be playing nsw cup instead of 20s?

Seriously, we have a kid coming through who has the potential to be the next Billy Slater… If we hold him back, we might as well say good bye.

Moltzen is a 5/8... When Benji gets injured, Moltz should get a call up!!!

I dont think it will be long before we see Tedesco in FG…We all saw how Moltzen plays fullback last year and unless there is a 180 shift I dont expect he will last long.

If it takes a Dally M winning Fullback turned successful coach, To instruct Tim that he needs to run the ball back straight and get meters with his kick return, Then I don't hold out much hope for him.
I believe Tim now believes he is best suited to Fullback as he knows it's the only way he will see First Grade, I also believe he knows that Tedesco is as much a chance in the 1 as anyone if not more….
Wish you all the best Tim, But Jimmy the Kid is miles in front of you...... Miles!!

You can't teach commitment ,guts and heart

Tim Moltzen has proven by his lack of commitment to the high ball , signing with another club that he lacks commitment and he is only good when all others around him are playing well (fair weather footballer)

As Watto said , we risk losing the best young up and coming fullback in the country by keeping Moltzen at fullback

I keep hearing that Potter is the answer , but his actions keep bewildering me , much like our last coach

We should of made no decisions yet in regards to at least 12 positions , especially fullback , but it seems to be back to the future again

Yep, Ted is the future. Regardless of Moltzen's form he's only going to be keeping the jumper warm. No use trying to build him up too much as a fullback

moltzen last year was shocking but gee he had a bloody lot of mates, maybe potter can bring the best out in him hope so if he gets hurt then its teddys turn.but how good is it to have a good backup

What actions? It is just another nothing article to kill another day of the off season.

Wait till he selects his first team, wait till someone loses form or gets injured and then judge action.

For what it's worth, it will do Tedesco the world of good to have some time in state cup or perhaps even Ron Massey Cup to build up his strength/confidence. Assuming he stays healthy, he will play first grade this season, just a matter of when.

If Teddy plays RMC (4th Grade) In his life I will eat my Hat…
The kid is 20 hasn't played in 11 Months and Is starting FB in Ressies (Albeit only a trial)
He is training the house down, A junior Rep and future star of the game.
There'll be no RMC for Jimmy boi!!

If you have been watching the training videos Moltz has been training with the back line that I will assume will be our No 1 backline

I just would of thought that Potter would have come in with an open mind in regards to a lot of positions ( as I said about 12 positions in my opinion are open )and would have watched hours upon hour upon hours of video of the Tigers in action Forget the training track , most of us would look pretty handy without fair dinkum opposition

If he has Gary , there are no doubts in my mind that Moltzen isn't the first fullback you would pick and a fair few would agree . If Potter has been watching the videos he needs a quick trip to OPSM

Teddy has 30 mins NRL experience and is coming off a knee reco
Moltz has nearly 100 games (amazing) and fully fit afaik.

Moltz isnt perfect, neither is Teddy….I can see why Potters gone the way it looks like he will.

Criticism so soon a tad harsh not a tackle made or ball kicked

Just another silly season article. However, I would like to hope Moltzen is looking to improve (much like most of the side. There weren't many who had a consistently good 2012.)

I don't care who plays at fullback as long as they do a good job and dont have to constantly tackle because the other 12 in front of him cant manage the job.

Moltzen probably looked like he lacked confidence and probably missed a few tackles, but he is not Robinson Crusoe there. I can think of at least 6 higher paid and higher profile players that should've tackled a lot harder than they did last year, and that would mean his workload at fullback was reduced by 50% in defence.

No one can continue to claim that Moltzen is Sheen's or Benji's bum boy. Things have changed, new coach and methods, and Moltzen is still there. Must be some talent there.

If Moltzen can bring the ball back at speed and get over the advantage line, he'll be hard to dislodge IMO. Moltzen has yet to prove this though and if he continues to shimmy across field only to offload it to the wingers to hit it up, he'll be in reggies quick smart.

The other factor is of course how well Tedesco comes back from injury. As far as natural fullback instincts are concerned, Tedesco is a more complete footballer than Moltzen IMO, despite being less experienced. For those who can make it to Bathurst this Friday, it should prove an interesting night.

The Eels and Roosters trials should heat up a bit more though and I for one will be very interested to see how both players go about their business.
