NRL increases annual club grants to $7m

NRL clubs will each receive an immediate $2 million injection thanks to the $1 billion broadcast deal signed earlier this year.

All 16 clubs will potentially have a funding package of $7 million to help balance the sheets in 2013, the league announced on Wednesday.

Most notably, the base grant provided to all clubs has risen dramatically from $3.85 million to $5.85 million for 2013.

The deal was signed off on Wednesday after consultation between the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and the club council.

"It is something that will provide the clubs with the ability to invest in their businesses for growth and it provides security for players and fans," interim chief executive Shane Mattiske said in a statement.

"The first of the six pillars of the strategic plan announced this week states that clubs should be sustainable and resourced to perform and grow and this is a direct investment in that outcome that we are pleased to deliver.

"The finalisation of club funding allows us to focus on player payments and the CBA and those ongoing discussions with the RLPA (Rugby League Players' Association) will continue (on Thursday)."

In addition to the base grant of $5.85 million, clubs can cash in on a further $1.15 million if they can deliver on off-field commitments - including online assets, ground signage and welfare, education and community relations.

Half of it pays out sheens immediately - problem gone - move on.
Yes we start a bit behind the other clubs but it's well and truly worth it to avoid any chance of angst in the coming 2 seasons.

What exactly are they referring to with online assets.

Citizen Tiger - the 1 billion is over 5 years so that's 200 mill a year.
the 7 mill/year/club equates to 112 mill per year or 56% of the 200

NRL clubs are almost like Centrelink recipients Waiting for their money every season to bail them out of an ever increasing debt

Lets try something different , use the money to train the clubs to live off their own earnings and at least break even every season

And then the money can go where it should be going

1/ Junior clubs throughout Australia

2/ Regional clubs throughout Australia

3/ International rugby league (in particular our Pacific neighbours ) and French RL

A strong international game will help with bringing more talent through NZ and France instead of losing them to RU and make better international football games which will help the IRL support itself

Good analogy. The ARLC should be getting the clubs to submit yearly business plans up until the moratorium on expansion expires. Any club who regresses in this period should be fighting to justify their license.

This game rewards crap management, the ARLC should be encouraging clubs to become self sufficient so that the annual grants can go toward player payments and subsidising memberships.
