NRL's Betting Scandal Tangled Web

Will be interesting to see the ramifications for Tandy's appeal. Regardless of that result though, I would be surprised if an NRL clubs picked him up.

I agree, because if he gave away a penalty, you would not be sure if it was simple human error.

As expected, Elias has got off the hook - the evidence just seems to circumstanial unfortunately - despite the fact it being glaringly obvious that something sus went on.

I thought the magistrate put far too much stock in the fact he had a multi going. As the prosecution explained that was all about deflection the attention a single bet would attract. It's not that weird someone would take 4 odds-on (and you'd pick the AFL since it's probably the most predictable major competition in Australia) to disguise the dodgy part of the bet.

I think the magistrate's dismissive attitude towards the horse racing steward and his acknowledgement of the betting analyst's bona fides were telling. The prosecution set themselves up for a fall by wheeling out racing and gambling identities, who are not only laymen, but had vested interests in a particular result.

This whole episode is a reflection of the betting industry's power and the influence they wield. The fact remains that the agency offerred the so called exotic bet, they did not apply an upper $ limit and the result did not affect their greedy routine of pocketing millions daily. If I could find John Elias I'd buy him a beer.

Jepordising the integrity of the game, what a hero. The last thing we want is for something like the Serie A with Juventus or the Pakistan Cricket team to come of the NRL.

It seems as though you can be found guilty of match fixing if you multi bet though. I guess it's some consolation knowing the pricks lost out though.
