Cronulla Sharks halfback Scott Porter has tonight been named 2010 NSW Cup Player of the Year at the Annual Life Member’s night held at the NSW League’s Club in Sydney.

Porter pipped last year’s player of the year, Balmain Ryde-Eastwood’s David Gower, by a single vote in one of the closest counts in recent history.

Porter lead the Sharks side to an eighth placed finish and nearly masterminded the upset of the season when his side almost toppled the eventual premiers, Canterbury-Bankstown, in Round One of the NSW Cup Final Series.

NSWRL General Manager Mr. Geoff Carr said Porter and Gower are prime examples of the calibre of players competing in the NSW Cup.

“Scott has already proven he can be a success at NRL level and David has a wonderful career ahead of him if his performances in 2010 are anything to go by,” Carr said.

“The NSW Cup competition is about nurturing and developing players to play in the National Rugby League and with over a hundred players elevated this year I think we are back on the right track.

“We are looking forward to the 2011 season and a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes to make sure it is even more successful than 2010.”

In the Bundaberg Red Cup competition Mounties front-rower Pat Galea pipped joint runners-up Coedie Towney (The Entrance Tigers) and Jamie Clark (Mounties) for top honours.

The fleet footed front-rower was a part of the Bundaberg Red Cup Representative side which beat Fiji in their one off test match in November and was a major reason why the Mounties side progressed so far into the Final Series.

Bulldogs halfback Josh Reynolds also received an award for his man of the match performance in the 2010 NSW Cup Grand Final in which his side defeated the Windsor Wolves 24-12.

Yeah, funny how David Gower just misses out on getting NSW Cup Player of the Year for 2 years in a row, but couldn't get a decent crack on the bench for the Wests Tigers.

Hope he has a great year with the Dragons and gets plenty of game time in first grade
