NYC Report Wests Tigers vs Dragons
Wests Tigers defeated St George-Illawarra 48-20 in Holden Cup at the SCG.
The Dragons opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when winger Brett Anderson dived over in the corner for a 4-0 lead. Half-back Shannon Crook failed to convert the try.
It became 8-0 when lock Kal Collins barged his way over the tryline in the 13th minute. Crook converted the try for a 10-0 lead.
Wests Tigers opened their account in the 15th minute when half-back Luke Brooks took the line on and beat three defenders to score under the posts. Manaia Rudolph converted the try to leave Wests Tigers trailing 10-6.
Brooks grabbed his second try three minutes later when he gave a good short ball for full-back Kurtis Rowe to cut through the defence before offloading inside for Brooks to score. Rudolph converted the try for a 12-10 lead after 20 minutes.
Wests Tigers stretched their lead in the 26th minute when forward Shane Lal used his strength in a three man tackle to plant the ball down under the posts. Rudolph converted for an 18-10 lead.
Talented young back Mitchell Moses scored his first try in his comeback from a leg injury when he leapt high to defuse a Brooks crossfield kick. Rudolph converted the try for a 24-10 lead after 32 minutes.
St George hit back in the 37th minute, Charly Runciman jumping to claim a high ball. An easy miss at goal left the score 24-14 at the Half Time break.
Wests Tigers spent much of the opening 10 minutes of the second half successfully defending their line, to the delight of the crowd.
Wests Tigers then went 100 metres in a set to score a great try to Kurtis Rowe. The fullback finished some brilliant work from Mitchell Moses who showed his trademark footwork to slice through the midfield.
Rudolph converted his fifth try to keep his 100% accuracy going for the day, making the score 30-14 in the 57th minute.
Wests Tigers were over again to stretch their lead in the 60th minute, Manaia Rudolph stepping over from close range. A fantastic break from Kurtis Rowe had moved his team within just metres of the line.
Another conversion from Cherrington made the score 36-14.
Manaia Cherrington grabbed a try of his own in the 69th minute, strolling over under the posts with the Dragons defence starting to tire.
Cherrington converted his own to make it 42-14.
Nathan Milone soccers the ball through a number of times from 50 metres out to extend the Wests Tigers' lead. Cherrington converts his 8th in the 76th minute to make the score 48-14.
St George-Illawarra finally crack the Wests Tigers line, second rower Vincent Stowers crossing out wide in the 79th minute. The try is converted leaving the score 48-20.
