Hopefully this will be of interest to some of you. But Penrith Rugby Club is running an open trial on the 10 March.
Penrith play in the Shute shield and traditionally have struggled, but none the less premier rugby is of a good standard even at the lower clubs, and has proven to be a pathway to further opportunity in professional and semi professional ranks.
At Penrith in the last 3 seasons 5 players have have been selected into S15 programs, 1 play division 2 in France (a fully professional league) and 4 have gone on to play in the National league in England in both Div 1 and Div 2 (semi professional competitions).
In addition to the premier squad, there is also a development squad (which I have been roped into assisting as the backs/skills coach), the squad is made up of a number of ex leaguies, country boys and some very talented polynesians that are looking at having some rugby polish put onto there obvious skills, this squad will be strengthened by former QLD reds squad members Pete Niumata and Piela Afu and will feature a couple of ex shute shield players to help develop the squad. It is envisaged the develpment squad will prepare players for Shute shield and beyond.
Both programs will be run on providing opportunity and the trial will view all unseen trialling players on their merits and they are serious on finding room in both squads for the right players.
Too many times I've heard stories about player x being so talented but never getting a chance cause he couldn't get a go, and we have no doubt there is a number of players in that situation and therefore offering this opportnity.
