Origin

Heard about a month ago triple m making a suggestion about playing origin in 3 weeks with no NRL around it. They wanted it to stay on Wednesday cause its a good tradition. Similar to the lions coming to play aus in recent times.

-Would allow less injuries (hayne injured trying to play the weekend after origin).
-the origin feel would be for 3 weeks.
-benefit clubs with a break and the star players being able to play all NRL games.
-would let clubs make some strategic changes mid season and possibly some signings?

Kinda like the idea, anyone else?

I like the idea of the origin players going into camp for 3 weeks and playing every week. Bang, bang, bang. I think we would see better games as they would eat and breathe origin with no distractions from club duties. You also would not see farcical situations where players didnt put in 100% for their club between games due to fear of injury or pulled out of club games due to less than serious injuries.

As to what to do with the NRL premiership during this time? I really do not know. Maybe move origin to 2 weeks after the GF and then stage any international footy after that. Thats a bit unfair for NZ and the Poms though as our blokes would be battle hardened and have sealed most combinations….its all a bit messy but what we have now is crap I reckon.

I'd play it over 2 Weeks… Friday, following Wednesday, following Sunday.

Make it a real battle!!!

I really liked the idea on MMM. Specifically it was:
1\. All origin played over a three week period say Sunday night
2\. Same weekends (sat) could be NZ vs a ROW or GB side. Or even a Kiwi origin vs islands. Tonga, Samoa etc
3\. Friday night could be NSW City/Country games and a Qld City/Country series.
4\. Any NRL players not involved in origin, NZ or City/Country drops back to NSW Cup to play curtain raisers or other places.
5\. NSW Cup players drop back to accommodate.
A true "representative" series, three weekends full of great games and no direct impact on clubs.
No "break" for players mid year but sure they can handle it.

My opinion is that SOO is purely a marketing tool - it shows how the game can be played without the restraint of the salary cap. All the initial reasons for the concept have now passed given it is now a national game with equal wages.

The NRL is the best and most sustainable product. SOO should support NRL and answer to its needs, not vice versa.

I reckon go with one of two ideas:

1\. Only play one SOO match per year. Rotate venue between Sydney, Brisbane and Neutral
- play one split round (4 matches per weekend) either side of the match. SOO players cannot play for their NRL club during this round

2\. Retain the 3 matches, but play them consecutively over three weeks. Play 2 split rounds during this period, SOO players cannot play for their NRL club:
- Weekend 1: Split round 1a
- Wednesday 1: SOO 1
- Weekend 2: Split round 1b
- Wednesday 2: SOO 2
- Weekend 3: Split round 2a
-Wednesday 3: SOO 3
- Weekend 4: Split round 2b

I'm happy the way it is. Couldn't care less about clubs missing players. It does 2 things to the nrl teams
1) punishes those who have always been stacked I.e storm, broncs.

2) gives some young guys a chance in the top grade.

As much as I like the idea of a 3-week Origin period like the Lions tour, the good thing about having each Origin 3 weeks apart is the ability for tension to build up between sides in the breaks between games.

Gordon Tallis said on radio yesterday it'd be insane to have no NRL over 3 weekends mid-season. I'm finding it boring enough to watch only 4 games, let alone none! Plus, there's the chance the NRL competition would lose momentum as you forget about it.

Whilst there's no perfect solution, my option would be to take the 'Lions' option - suspend the NRL for 3 weeks and play Origin matches in consecutive weeks - on Wednesdays. If Origin players complain about being over worked or that they have to play too much football they can go get a job scrubbing toilets for $7 an hour. Then their 6 or 7 figure pay packet wont look so bad

Make a real spectacle of the game

Origin should stand alone

Run a 4 quarter competition while Origin is running ,maybe even Club of Origin

Make the month open as trade window for all clubs and all players

If you want , have a NZ SOO North Island V South Island

NYC SOO to be curtain raisers for all SOO games

We have so many things we could with the game just need someone with the Jatz crackers to make changes

I like it except the NZ stuff… I'm sick of the NZRL getting a leg-up from the ARL and then have the hide to complain about players choosing to play for other teams.

Its time to kick em out and force them to start contributing to RL as a whole!

How good would origin be, played on a Sunday arvo?

There needs to be a change to how we do origin. Some great suggestions above. I reckon it could easily run over two weeks. Game 1 on a Friday, game 2 the following Saturday, game three on the following Sunday. Sunday afternoon origin decider would be something to see.

NRL has two bye weeks or has two weeks off.

While I understand tiger watto, I don't agree. The game needs rugby league to be strong in NZ. If we can help that in some small way happen we should. An NZ v Pacific island origin game on one of those weekends would be great. Get PNG involved somewhere.
