NSW coach Laurie Daley says Wests Tigers winger Pat Richards is in contention for a State of Origin debut after making a strong return to the NRL.

The interstate opener is six weeks away and already there are headaches – some pleasant and some less so – for the NSW hierarchy. If Paul Gallen and Robbie Farah don’t recover from injury in time, Daley will be forced to appoint a new skipper.

There are also concerns other senior players, such as Luke Lewis and halves contender Jarrod Mullen, are also underdone after missing action in the early stages of the season.

Those setbacks have been tempered by the strong form of Canterbury’s Josh Reynolds and Parramatta hooker Nathan Peats, while Jorge Taufua made a successful return against Cronulla on Sunday. Another revelation has been Richards, who returned to the Tigers after an eight-year stint with Wigan Warriors in the Super League.

Asked if Richards was on his radar, Daley said: ‘‘Yeah, he’s been great, he’s playing in a team up there near the top. He’s a guy who has plenty of experience and is a guy who we’ll continue to monitor along with a couple of the others.

‘‘Taufua was strong on the weekend, [James] McManus is starting to play good football, [Akuila] Uate, [Will] Hopoate is playing reasonable footy as well. We’ve got players there starting to play well and are competing for spots. That’s good for us.’’

One advantage Richards has is his goal-kicking ability. The Irish international is the NRL’s leading points-scorer and would become an even more attractive proposition if incumbent Blue and goalkicker James Maloney is omitted.

Daley said thought would be given to goal-kicking options given the closeness of recent series. ‘‘It’s something we’ll obviously look at because over the past couple of years it’s been quite tight,’’ he said. ‘‘You’d like to have a recognised goal-kicker, but if we need to take someone in who isn’t a recognised goal-kicker, we will. We’d have to weigh up our options and what our back-up plan is and go from there. You want to be picking guys playing really good football and if they can kick goals, that’s great.’’

I wouldn't play Richards in SOO. Too slow and not enough impact.

Great overall skill-set and a great first grader but I think to play SOO you need to have something extra.

I always thought you couldn't play SOO unless you are available to play for the Kangaroos?

He is a good player and has played well this year, but I'm also thinking he is too slow for that arena.

Keep Up The Good Work Pat!!!

Assuming that Boyd and Tate are wingers they aren't overly quick

Having said that it would be a huge shock to see Pat named

Realistically he blew his chance by nicking off to the UK for the best years of his career, he would have been a shoe in for a number of those years given some of the blokes NSW have chosen in that time. It would be nice to see him named but I don't think he'll get a look in.

I don't think Richards has ANY regrets whatsoever going to SL/UK…

He's be behind Morris and Mansour

I think Taufua is in front of Mansour. They like he's meters early in the sets which is a big thing in Origin. Same reason why they didn't pick Merritt for years.

Would have played origin for the entire 8 years if he stayed. Wouldn't let anyone down if selected and has some weapons NSW could use (kick-offs and drop-outs and goals). Probably the lack of pure speed goes against him.

I wonder if Teddy might have been considered for the wing if he was still on the field and playing like his first couple of games.

I didn't say he would regret it, I said he missed his window of opportunity.

to be honest his kicking would be a massive asset, kicks field goals as good as anyone and his drop outs/kick offs would also add another dimension to the team.

BUT, he is probably a bit too slow for that level as others have said.

I think there would be a few wingers in front of him. Is really playing great footy for us and brings experience, goal kicking ect for every game. In saying that I think he missed his chance to play SOO whilst playing overseas, but if selected he would do exactly what he does when he plays for us, safe, reliable great finisher and boot goals from all over the park!

El Masri eventually played Origin and did well. McManus has played a few too and he's certainly nothing special. The team has no goalkicker, and as the leading point scorer Pat's in with a good shout.

Of the other first choice kickers in the comp, how many are in the ballpark of Origin?

His kick offs would be incredible in Origin. To give your side the chance to get the ball back or force an error off every kick off is a weapon you can't understate. The fact that he's arguably the best goal kicker and drop kicker in the world and a very solid winger in attack and defence + under the high ball. He really picks himself if they're serious.

I think he is def a chance…..if they pick Reynolds as 6...we need a kicker.

QLD always seem to get back to backs...enter Pattycake with his 70 metre drop outs.

I would pick him.

Dugan/Pattycake/Jennings/Hayne/Morris/Reynolds/Pearce.

His good ones are rippers , but the one from Saturday was just lucky no one got in the way it barely made 40 metres

Suppose it does come down to who NSW picks

But then again when Qld wins 3-0 it won't matter who you pick

But don't worry I reckon NSW will win in 2015
