Women In League round pays tribute to women involved at all levels of the game from volunteers, supporters, administrators, mothers, sisters to grandmothers.
Wests Tigers is proud to once again have Belinda O’Neill as its Women in League ambassador. She sat down with Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten to discuss the round and how she feels about being involved.
Wests Tigers players will wear special Pink jerseys against the Bulldogs at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday night.
TODD When did you first become a fan of Rugby League?
BELINDA I can’t even remember my first experience with Rugby League, I grew up with the game entrenched in my family. My older brothers played and my Dad coached so I have always been a fan. I always used to get involved and help out with the teams, whether it being a cheerleader when I was 5 or doing the stats for the team, I always loved being around the game.
TODD How did you become a fan of Wests Tigers?
BELINDA I met my husband Mark O’Neill in 1994\. He had just started playing for the Balmain Tigers and then went on to play for Wests Tigers so I was involved with the club a lot. So I’ve been a fan for over 15 years now.
TODD How does it feel to be the Women in League ambassador for the Wests Tigers?
BELINDA I am extremely honoured and humbled to be chosen as the Women in League ambassador for Wests Tigers for the 2nd year now.
TODD Do you have any footy-watching rituals?
BELINDA Not really. When Mark was playing, I just had to make sure I was watching the game and not chatting to the other girls too much. I love watching but am easily sidetracked with a girlie chat!
TODD What are your thoughts on the NRL dedicating the round to the role of the Women in the game?
BELINDA Its great that the NRL are recognising the contribution of the females in Rugby League as they are involved in every facet of the game from Mums driving their sons to training to the ladies selling the raffle tickets. Women contribute in so many ways. It’s also great to see Pink everywhere and McGrath Foundation involved in the round as a Charity Partner. As a breast cancer survivor and a Rugby League fan, it is great to have these two areas together as they are both so close.
TODD I see you are wearing the special pink strip that Wests Tigers will play in against the Bulldogs in Round 16, what do you think of the design?
BELINDA I absolutely love it; even the Tiger has pink on it which is great.
