The current system for player movements is one that a lot of fans don't like. Obviously the players and the clubs aren't doing anything wrong and would be behind if they didn't sign players the year before they actually arrive or the player has a chance to maximize their potential earning value. Fans are left in a bind because they see players from their own team play for a whole year knowing they won't be there next year. Plus the possibility of a player being in the opposition costing them a potential win and finals spot knowing that next year they will be with their team. To me all of this ruins the spectacle of the comp for the most important stakeholders the fans. I heard a system a few weeks ago that i quite enjoyed and would work in our comp.
The system basically is an internal draft that takes place at the end of the season say October or November. During the regular season each club can resign their own players for whatever fee they choose. Total spendings would be made public therefore the known value of how much is left in the salary cap is known for each club. Any player who doesnt have a contract for the following season with their current club would entered into a pool available for the draft. Each club gets 4 draft picks each so 64 picks in total. each player in the draft puts forward the value and length in which they will get their contract. This value is agreed upon by the nrl to ensure that it is a fair assessment. Ultimately the players run the risk of over valuing themselves and potentially not being picked up in the draft or going to somewhere they might not desire. Also nothing is stopping the original club from taking the player that was at their club previously. The draft order works on who finished last that season getting the first pick and then backwards from there.
Example: Manly would get the first pick based on the current ladder and then canberra, the titans, the eels etc.
So say Foran wanted 1 million a year to stay at the eagles but they only offer him 700k.by the end of the season they have not come to an agreement and foran enters the draft wanting 1 mil a year for 4 years. Manly would have the option to pick him with the first pick but ultimately cant afford that under their remaining cap. Parramatta want Foran but have a fear that canberra or titans will pick him up before them. They can have the option of trading with Manly to get the first pick in the draft by moving other picks say 1st 2nd and 3rd for manlys 1st and 3rd. Foran could then be picked up parra for his desired contract and manly get a second 2nd round pick by moving down.
Any player choosing to return to the Nrl or come ocer to the nrl would go through the draft eg burgess sbw te'oor an english player wanting to try his luck. Any player not picked up in the draft goes into a free agency pool that is open slather but can only sign a 1 yr deal.
What do people think of this system would it work
