Firstly, this is all guess work but I like to try and see what cap space we might have to play with. I’ve done it before but things move on so here I go again
Take it in that spirit and let’s not go with the one liner responses like “we don’t have anywhere near that amount”. Maybe not but let me know your logic. It’s hard to think about who we could sign if we don’t make some calls on who may or may not be here next year and where that leaves us in terms of squad numbers and cap space
Of our 2019 squad of 30 we have Farah, Fonua and Rochow all gone for 2020, so that takes us to 27 and maybe we’ve saved $600k
Benji is now signed and sounds like Chris Lawrence will be soon, so let’s assume it doesn’t cost more for them in 2020 than it did for 2019, maybe Benj gets a bit more and Chris a bit less
We had a $320k salary cap reduction in 2019 and it remains for 2020 as far as I’m aware so no upside or downside there
Only signing so far is Billy Walters, couldn’t be a lot, say $150k max and we’re at 28 with maybe $450k to spare
We upgraded at least four in 2019, being Aloiai, Mikaele, Liddle and Thompson, which no doubt means they are all on more in 2020 than they were in 2019. Hard to say how much, let’s say $300k across the four, leaving us with $150k spare
We upgraded 2 development players in 2019, Talau and Seyfarth, maybe that costs us $150k for 2020 over what we paid them in 2019, this takes us to back to our 2019 spend with nothing up our sleeve
Let’s assume Matterson is gone, saves $350k but for sure we won’t get anyone of that quality for that money, so that hurts and we’re back down to 27 with his $350k up our sleeve
Let’s be optimistic and say Matulino is medically retired. Maybe he was on more but let’s say $400k, so we are at 26 with $750k spare
Packer and Reynolds seem to be on the best part of $1.3m per year between them. Let’s say we offload one only and pay half which is probably our best outcome, so we save $350k, leaving us with a squad of 25 with $1.1 million to spend on 5 players
Let’s assume we upgrade two more 2 development players in 2020, again costing us something, maybe $100k leaving us with a squad of 27 with $1 million to spend on 3 players
I feel it’s fairly worst case but welcome other views and also how we spend it
