**Wests Tigers discard Robert Lui impressing new club North Queensland Cowboys with pre-season work**
By Wayne Heming AAP January 24, 2012 6:34PM

But back in the familiar surrounds of Townsville where he grew up and with the support of his new Cowboys teammates, including close friend and chief rival for the No.7 jumper, Ray Thompson, he feels he can not only turn around his playing career, but also his life.

Lui shared in five straight grand final wins with Thompson as juniors playing for Central Tigers before their careers went in different directions.

He was released by Wests Tigers late last year following some personal issues, the latest an assault charge, adjourned until March 21 when the NRL season will be three weeks old.

Lui wants the halfback job inside Johnathan Thurston - the world's No.1 halfback keen to move to five-eighth with a view to filling Darren Lockyer's place for Queensland.

Despite his off-field dramas, Lui has impressed his new NRL club, shedding some of his off-season weight baggage to be in the frame for their first trial of 2012 against Brisbane Broncos in 11 days.

"I always wanted to come back and play with Ray again," Lui said on Tuesday.

"For now, we have to compete against each other for that one spot at halfback.

"If Ray takes it, I'll be happy for him and, if I get it, I know he will be happy for me.

"We'll still me best mates at the end of the day because we both love what we do."

Playing inside a world-class competitor like Thurston will be not be an issue for Lui, who did the job for the Tigers inside Kiwi international Benji Marshall last season.

"I know I can do it. I played inside Benji and other great hookers and halfbacks like Benji and Robbie Farah," said Lui.

"He (Thurston) has been the best number seven now for a while but I think he wants to play out a bit wider.

"It's up to the coach to choose out of me or Ray or Ben Jones and Michael Morgan as well.

"I just want to get a chance in the trial against the Broncos … I can't wait."

Yawn! :blah We will also see great stories about Carney and a few others before the season starts. Time will be the judge.
I know this sounds mean but I hope Lui has an average year :imp:

The cowboys have Robert Lui looking verry fit for his start off.We may see a different Lui up here this year.I went to the cowboys open day on saturday and the whole side looks in the best condition I've seen for the season start. Can't wait for the WT clash though, hopefully no cyclones this year…

If Lui actually did what he was alleged to have done to this girlfriend, then I hope he crashes and burns. If not, then good luck to him. I hate it when a person violates and oppresses someone's life and just goes merrily on their way to greater fame and success - it's the epitome of injustice and it stinks!

It realy is a shame this guy has so many off-field issues. If he didn't he realy could be anything. Sure he's a liability in defence but so was Marshall once. It's a shame that we had 2 guys in our squad last yr (Lui and Fifita) who if it wasn't off-field drama and poor attitude, could go a real long way

He is NQC problem now He was just starting to become a consistant first grade player and was gaining so much confidence

It will be interesting to see how much we miss him in 2012 and beyond

I just hope he grows up a bit off the field

His Missus surely doesn't deserve anymore of his crap

Who starts an article with ''But"?

I think he'll go well up thar yonder.

My mistake. when editing It looks like I deleted the first sentence… Sorry

Tis OK mate….I understand, QLDer and all that.
Dont worry yourself about it OK>?

I'll be interested to see how he combines with Thurston if JT moves to 5/8 and Lui gets the halfback job.

when wests-tigers play the cowboys, run our big blokes at him.
especially when close to the line.
this will show if his defence has improved.

I suspect our bog blokes will take great delight in running at him and then after smashing him, giving him a friendly wink or tap on the head with a 'how's it going mate'.

Lui in my despised player list, currently equal first with Greg Bird, TBH I was'nt huge fan to start with, I found myself yelling at him in frustration more than any tiger player since Daine Laurie

lol… sounds good in theory, but I'd say the Cowgirls may have a few big blokes as a minder. Tariq Sims, Corey Patterson or James Tomou dont mind putting on a shot...

Every coach will be sending traffic at Thurston or Lui all year. Just like they will send plenty of traffic at Moltzen & Marshall. Problem is, our halves are dumb enough to take them on!!!
