Roberts eager for challenge against ladder leaders

Wests Tigers outside back James Roberts is looking forward to returning to the centres for Saturday’s clash against Melbourne Storm, although he says he doesn’t care what number he wears on his back as long as the team is winning.

After spending the past three games on the wing, Roberts shifts back to the centres for the Round 15 match due to the arrival of international winger Ken Maumalo to the club and Adam Doueihi missing in the centres due to HIA protocols.

“I’m looking forward to being back in the centres and I’m hoping to have a big game, but the only thing that matters is getting the two competition points,” Roberts said.

“We’ve got big Ken [Maumalo] starting with us — we’re excited for his first game this week. Hopefully he scores another three [tries] for us.”

Following last Sunday’s disappointing loss to the Parramatta Eels, Roberts said he and his teammates are eager for an improved effort against the defending premiers — and he understands it’s going to be a good challenge.

“We’re coming off the back of a bad loss. We didn’t play the way we wanted to, like we had the past two weeks before that. We’re looking to turn it around and hopefully we get the two points,” he said.

“Obviously they [Storm] have been the best team for a number of years, and they’re the premiership favourites again this season, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us.”

Roberts will be far more comfortable in the centres, I hope he gets some early ball, he actually goes looking for some quality ball, because he hasn't received any yet

- BJ Leilua: “Best centre in the world? You’re looking at him.” (not even playing centre in reserve grade)
- Roberts & Nofa are living together and will form a great combination (both of them looked clueless playing together)
- Tamou: “Douiehi needs to control the team” (moved from 5/8 the same week)
- Luciano: We can match the top teams (smashed 40-12 by Parra)

The list of pump-up articles which backfire grows every week. I don't have great hope for this one to not join the list.

If you're going to do that, is it selective choosing that you dont include all the Luke Brooks expectation quotes from early season? I will admit the last few games he has come out of his shell but still to be decided,

You're right. I forgot about those ones cause he's been playing well. There was all this talk about him taking charge in the pre-season, then he went missing in the first few rounds.

Absolutely wasted in our team. We have no idea how to utilise a player with speed because it’s been so long since we’ve actually had one!

The Jet is not the problem its the mediocre players around him ,sign a competent 6 and that changes for 2 players Brooks and Roberts ..maybe Hastings is the key that has to play out .

Yeah, not sure other teams do it to the extent WT seem to but the media exposure these puff pieces do seem to be own goals all too often.

It is hard because there are rules about how often the club has to make players available to the media. The media then ask a couple of questions and that becomes the focus of the article.

Exactly right ...was how the Kyle Flanagan situation occurred a few weeks ago

I honestly think that JTJ will do well this week with Mbye back in the 5/8 spot hopefully,Brooks has stepped up enormously with him as a partner and Moses is a recognised ball distributor ...he will get the ball out to Jimmy and the rest is up to him ...I hope his defense holds up,but his speed in space is unquestionable,be good if Jet and Ken kill it this week....and the team as a whole perform well...

If it works out as you state, then the Talau experiment is over for now?

I think TT is still young with heaps of talent, but has made errors as well as glimpses of brilliance..I think he will be better in the NRL next year but needs time in KOE cup to learn more..Let me ask you,if JTJ plays well and makes breaks and backs up players in space with the line open would you prefer him in centres or TT ....

James Roberts’ future is far from settled. The 28-year-old joined the Wests Tigers this season on a two-year deal, but the second season is in the club’s favour.

A shoulder injury has hampered Roberts this year, he’s played nine of a possible 14 games for the Tigers. But he is hopeful he has done enough to “finish off” his career at Concord.

“I love the club, it’s been really good,” Roberts told reporters on Wednesday.

“There’s a really good group of lads here and I’m close to a lot of them.

“I’m enjoying my time here and not really thinking about the future at all. I’ve been showing up to training and having fun, enjoying myself, so whatever happens, happens.

“I’d love to stay and finish off here, to be honest. But anything can happen in this game.”

Roberts is yet to hear from the club on whether they will activate the option to keep him for the 2022 season.

I reckon we keep him the extra year as depth...

At the $150k we are paying him, it is a no brainer to keep him on, I still say if he is played at right centre and given good ball, he will be a huge asset, as yet for whatever reason this hasn't happened

I'd be happy to keep him for second year. Minimal cost and definitely worth a spot in the 30. Still plenty of time to go, he is showing a lot more return to form potential than BJ ever has. Of the 2 Roberts surely has to be the one retained 'on/with hope or faith of getting better.
