Ryan Matterson keen to make big impression with Wests Tigers after off-season switch from Roosters
Versatile Ryan Matterson was a key part of the Roosters’ 2018 premiership triumph. But the 24-year-old craved a bigger role and sees Wests Tigers as the right club ‘to give me a fair go.’

The easy option for Ryan Matterson would’ve been to stay. He had two more years on his deal at the Sydney Roosters, where his versatility made him a key part of their 2018 premiership triumph.
But, when the club signed Angus Crichton to play in his favoured right back-row spot, Matterson made what he believed was the best decision for his career.
“They wanted him at right back row - I wanted to play right back row. They said they wanted me playing lock,” Matterson said.
“I said, ‘Yeah, that’s okay’. But I wanted to play my own style of football. I said, ‘I think this is the best time to leave’.”
The 24-year-old went on to become a critical part of Trent Robinson’s bench, having the versatility of playing centre, second row and lock.
But, Matterson craved a bigger role and, after talking to a number of clubs, including junior club Parramatta, opted to shift to Concord.
He insisted he had no concern with the move despite the controversial exit of then-coach Ivan Cleary and the appointment last last year of Michael Maguire.
“I only talked to Ivan once, but I wasn’t really worrying about who was coaching me. I just wanted to go to a club that wanted me,” Matterson said.
“I really wanted an opportunity to cement my spot in the team and to become a leader, become a role model and have people look up to me.
“I want to actually help people. I wanted someone to give me a fair go and play my style. I think the move to the Wests Tigers was the best decision for me.”
Matterson was a surprise showing in mid-November on day one of the Tigers’ pre-season, just a handful of weeks after the Roosters’ grand final victory.
He admitted wanting to join his premiership-winning teammates on their celebratory trip to Las Vegas, however was prevented by salary-cap measures. The US sojourn apparently came under the 2019 cap, which didn’t include Matterson in the squad.
“I wanted to go, but I quickly realised that I’m no longer at the Roosters and I’ve got a new brotherhood to form,” he said.
“There’s only a certain time that you can cherish (the grand final win) because then you’ve got to put it in the past and move forward for the next year.
“Especially when you’re starting at a new club, you can’t really bring that hype about winning a grand final to a new team because they haven’t experienced it.
“And you don’t want to come across with an ego, either. So you’ve got to put it behind you and then move on and focus on a new goal with the team.”

If you follow the players on social media you can see how much the players enjoy being around him at work and in their free time.

Will be one of the fan favorites going forward.

Very much looking forward to seeing Matterson in WT colours, has the right attitude and skill to go a long way in the game.

Very underrated signing. Hopefully the injuries (head knocks) are behind him. Looking forward to watching Ryan play for the tigers.

A large body with some speed and the ability to pop a ball, keen to see him and Twal on the field at the same time.

He does, and he seems set on right side backrow, which we were lacking in, maybe now the people suggesting he move spots might have a rethink

I would still like to see a backrow of Matterson, Lawrence and Twal at lock.
IMO that would be a strong backrow.
However I don't think we have the depth in the front row to see that happening. I think Twal will be used on the prop rotation or starting Prop.
Now that Jennings has been signed surely Madge will insist the last spot in the Top 30 is a Prop.

I don't think Jennings was technically free yet we still signed him.
Souths have excess back. I think they were looking to put Corey Allan in for Jennings.
I would be targeted clubs with excess props because imo it's a high rotation position and is our weakest position.

For this year we could probably only add another decent prop by either picking up overpaid depth (like Leilani Latu or Morgan Boyle from the Titans) or by picking up an overpaid player like Tamou at the Panthers on full $750K pa freight (no thanks).

From the latest Madge comments it's sounds like Matterson is favourite for the RHS 2nd row position. With McQueen and Garner putting pressure on.

"While the battle between Josh Reynolds and Benji Marshall to partner Brooks in the halves is yet to be won, Maguire indicated he was closer to solving his selection dilemma in the backrow.

Currently, new signing Ryan Matterson is leading the race for the right edge spot but even he is facing stiff competition to secure his place.

“He’s skilful and he also knows when to be that backrower that needs to punch and do his job. He’s got a good blend in his game,” Maguire said.

“I’ve got a very competitive group there in the backrow. I’ve got people like Chris McQueen, who I’ve worked with before, and he’s played Origin and grand finals so the quality is there. Then I have players like Luke Garner coming through and Robbie Rochow.

“But look, I have been very impressed with Ryan Matterson.”

Seriously.

No respect to Benji…...but if Josh Reynolds is still not the number1 option at 5/8 by now then we for no idea about recruitment.

Props: Packer, Matulino, Musgrove, Aloiai, Miakele
Locks: Twal, Taylor, Eisenhuth and maybe even potentially MCK in a sub role.

I think we can play 3 big middle forwards all game if Madge wants too.

Madge loves a big forward pack! Would love a big mobile lock. I have always hoped Aloiai could get fit enough to play big minutes but kinda let down every year.
