Sharks could lose Carney over drugs crisis

The drugs scandal engulfing Cronulla may have claimed an innocent victim - with star five-eighth Todd Carney revealing new contract talks have been called off as a result of the crisis.

One a few high profile players still unsigned for 2014, Carney could now be lost to the Sharks as an unfortunate casualty of the saga.

Carney claimed he had all but put pen to paper on a new deal - before coach Shane Flanagan was stood down and football manager Darren Mooney sacked over their alleged involvement in a cover-up of doping practices at the club in 2011.

"It's hard at the moment with not knowing who the coach is going to be," Carney said.

"Moons and Flanno were doing my deal - it was close to being done and now it's gone.

"It's been put on hold, but for me I just want to concentrate on playing football.

"I'm in no rush to do anything, I know the club supports me and I support the club."

There's little doubt however that Flanagan's future at the club could well determine whether Carney re-signs.

The NSW Origin pivot did little to hide the closeness of his relationship with his deposed mentor - Flanagan showing the faith to offer Carney a lifeline following his sacking from the Sydney Roosters in 2011.

"I'm in contact with Flanno every day, because for me as a player, I hope he's back sooner rather than later," Carney said.

"To me he's still my coach and I get feedback from him every day."

There was no word from the Sharks on Tuesday with regards to reports the board was considering reinstating Flanagan as club coach.

Asked what he would ask of the board, Carney said: "I'd ask for him back as soon as possible.

"We need Flanno as a group because it's clear that he's brought this team together, players have come here because of him.

"We want him back."

Nahh stick with Miller - will be more satisfying long term. Would like to see the Tigers build a no dickheads culture similar to the Swans and not return to the Hill, Hoppa, Field etc days.

IF Miller doesn't make it then try another junior - maybe Brooks if he develops. Carney does offer a sugar hit, but a culture of a team is long term and needs to be fostered.

Would not go near him. We have enough junior halves comming through in

Sironen
Brooks
Miller
Mulcahy
Moses
Kitt
Madden

Don't need Carney

Lol what? Sack Anasta and sign Carney yes please. Carney at halfback and Marshall at five-eighth would be amazing. At least they would let him run plays.

Terry Hill never did anything wrong in his time at the Tigers as far as I can recall- he was great for us in the games that he played IMO.

Terry was barely on the field for us. Not really his fault but certainly didn't help fans opinion of him given he was essentially our marquee player of the day.

True, Hill missed a fair few games but he wouldn't have been included in a "no dickheads policy". He would have brought more fans to the club than what he would have turned away. He was the heart and soul of our team in those days, watch some of the old games, when he was at his inspirational best we nearly almost always won the game.

Get rid of Utai, Lote, Moltzen and Anasta and buy Carney along with Frank Prichard
We'd win the comp.

I'd prefer to stick with Miller, our issue for years is having no halfback. We finally decide to bring Miller in, so leave him there and let him adapt to firsts.

Exactly. Blooding is good for the club, there is no use retiring whole teams at once like the Dragons last yr. if we play our cards right we can seamlessly transition for years keeping a performing squad intact, rather than over-pay for short term.

WT got rid of Dane Laurie. Why would they now sign players like Carney or Josh Dugan?

Carney >

Would unload all the players user:TIGERS mentioned and sign him up.
Would love to see him @ the tigers but long term, he's seen a few clubs in his time but let him spend the rest of his career with us.

… would be a deadly halves combination.

Carney and Pritchard would just produce their usual 1 good game and then 2 average ones…we have more than enough of those type of players as it is. We need blokes that play consistently good every single week just like Cronk and Thurston do. Consistency as individuals and as a team is what we need to produce as a culture- not rocks and diamonds IMO.
