Sheens: we aren't getting the raps that we deserve

WESTS TIGERS coach Tim Sheens believes his side hasn't received due credit for its charge up the premiership ladder.

The Tigers have won four of their past five matches and sit in third position on the table before today's clash with Manly at Bluetongue Stadium.

While they have scraped home in their past three encounters - wins against the Cowboys, Titans and Broncos - Sheens bristled at suggestions the Tigers were well short of their best during the streak.

"I don't think we're a fair way away from our best football at all," Sheens told The Sun-Herald.

"What's our best football? Winning by 30? I don't think so.

"Our defence has been very good and we're able to play a bit more patiently to win games.

'"The fact we're not scoring 30 points per game doesn't mean that we're not playing well.

"We're playing better than what a lot of people give us credit for."

The Tigers are on track for their first finals appearance since winning the 2005 premiership despite a horror injury toll. Gareth Ellis, Beau Ryan, Geoff Daniela, Tim Moltzen, Jason Cayless and Taniela Tuiaki were all unavailable to play the Sea Eagles, while halfback Robert Lui is making his return from a knee injury.

"We're copping it from some sections that we're playing sides that are underdone, but have a look at our injury list," Sheens said.

"We might not have lost any players to State of Origin, but we've been without plenty of our better players for periods.

"We're relying more heavily on our field-position game and our defence and I don't see that as such a bad thing, to be quite honest.

"We've been a bit up and down but so have most sides, with the exception of St George [Illawarra].

"Just because we're winning by small margins, doesn't mean we're not playing OK."

The Tigers have received a timely boost ahead of today's 'Fibros v Silvertails' encounter in Gosford after mid-season signing from the Warriors, Wade McKinnon, signed a two-year extension yesterday.

"Wade has impressed all of us with his ability and commitment off the field," Tigers boss Stephen Humphreys said. "He's a specialist fullback who has really added a lot to our team."

The news was tempered by the loss of long-time assistant Royce Simmons - described by Sheens "as good as anyone I've worked with or against" - to St Helens.

"It's funny, I said to Royce that if I ever need a job, he owes me one now," Sheens quipped.

Sheens also backed one of his former players, Ricky Stuart, to again coach at the highest level.

"Rick has got enough standing in the game to warrant a start somewhere, for sure," Sheens said of the former Cronulla coach. "Sometimes it takes 12 months to find the right job. You've got to be a round peg looking for a round hole and maybe he was a square peg at Cronulla.

"It doesn't mean he's not a good coach, but sometimes that's why coaches reinvent themselves at new clubs."

Geez….falling in with 3 mins to go against the Broncos, and trailing 16 - 0 against the cowboys at one stage, and we not too far away from our best??
I wouldve thought thered be heaps more room for improvement, and I'd think he'd be hapy to fly under the radar while _winning ugly_.

Totally agree. I think Sheens should have kept his mouth shut on this one. I'm loving that we are flying under the radar a bit especially when we could be in second position by tomorrow and we don't have much media attention on us to be a real contender this year.

I can understand why Sheens is probably speaking up for his players who have put in a great effort this year but sometimes the media praise of the Tigers doesn't really suit us… especially when we are expected to win games easy (i.e. Cowboys game last week).

Yes Tim the 2010 Wests Tigers aren't even getting the recognition and support they deserve from all of their alleged fans.
This is mainly because these so called fans have never played at a seriously competitive level but arrogantly think that
this does not limit their insight into the game. Somehow they think that the ability to blindly cheer on reserve grade sides, play the Wii, and a good typing speed is a substitute for experiencing the game.

IMO Tim you and the coaching staff are doing a great job. Keep up the good work!

Mate - you really need to sing a different tune. Its old old old long ago.
You only need to listen to tallis and daley who Im sure have played at a much higher level than you - maybe, to realise that playing footy doesnt necessarally equal having much of an idea about it.

No - actually keep it up, your sense of superiority is highly amusing

I can't understand how you can be a West Tigers supporter when all your efforts go into bagging the Wests Tigers coach and the players that he chooses to field.
Daley and Tallis are not WT fans but you all are supposed to be.
Tallis has the not so hidden agenda of talking up his efforts as Souths forwards coach and Daley is fighting a rearguard action over his opposition to including Farah and Galloway and Heighington in the NSW SOO side.
At what point does the team and it's coach get your support?

Still waiting cat and fiddle, what level did you play to? get off your damned high horse.

On topic,
Its puzzling to me that Sheens is worried about the team receiving recognition in July….whats his angle here? just keep flying under the radar, let Saints, Penrith and the Eels get all the press. Get us a top two spot and let come what may in the finals. Plenty of time to dissect the season through the media once the season has finished for us.

Sheens never speaks openly to the press. He always has an agenda. So what's he up to here? My guess is that he is demonstrating to the team that they have his support and that they are playing well by his assessment. There is room for improvement, but he is disassociating himself from 'critics' who say that the Tigers don't deserve to be in second place. He's building egos in the team now, instead of smashing them. Just, as they say, my opinion.

He's preparing us & the Squad for a disappointment in the near future…

I won't be disappointed if we drop today, but I'll be frustrated if we don't analyze a loss properly and address those failings the following week.

Fiddle, the keyboard brigade will out number you on here mate. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, even Ron. :sunglasses: The problem will be how each individual understands or interprets the game. And you only have to look at the bi-annual CEO Meetings and Coaches Meetings to realize even the smart heads don't see it the same way. I hear your frustration Brother...

can't criticise unless you've played….*yawn*.....based on that 'logic' you can't criticise politicians either then, unless you've been one

Forget the BS about the Wests Tigers…..What's Sheens going to say ....We are Crap and don't desreve to be where we are....please...Wish he would say nothing to the media cause It just gives ammo to bag the guy...

The problem is TD is that people want to criticise Sheens for anything he says. If Tim had come out and said that we had been playing badly the same people would have criticised him for being negative.

Anyway enough of that. Carn the Tiges. 2 wins against the Eagles this year would be lovely.

EDIT: GEO good to see we read it the same.

I think that we are a fair way off our best.

Robbie has been getting back his form and now looks like he can play consistently well. Benji still isn't there. Our forwards look good but would look better if Sheens choose our strongest pack & especially bench. Our outside backs are still a little unsettled.

We haven't really put together a couple of top notch performances.

We are actually miles off our best however we have been winning and we could click pretty soon. If we do get it together we have a good shot.

I have no idea why Sheens came out with that article.

I agree woth Sheens. We arent getting any kudos at all.

Which is fine by me,I keep backing us to win the comp at very juicy odds.

With regard to how wwe are travelling, the effort and energy is the best I have seen, once we execute at that same level we can beat anyone, and well too.

Keeping in mind we have had a pretty hefty injury toll to key positions, and the number of close games we have won, well I am stoked with how we are travelling.

After today we cold be outright second and a win away from the lead.

What a great position to be in,and we should have some stars back in the very near future just in time for the finals.

Im extremely pumped!!!

Great stuff froma ll our lads!!!

If it's one thing I've learnt it's don't give the opposition psychological motivation. Both Farah and now Sheens have just done that. Far better for them both to make comments post-match.
