SMH Article 'We’ve lost faith in them’: Balmain consider shock exit from Wests Tigers merger

St George and Illawarra board are controlled by people with a business brain and who care about their club there is no one on that board with their own agenda. The board at West Tigers needs to be removed and faceless people behind it outed and removed once and for all. Change the name of the joint venture to Macarthur Tigers based it out of the two grounds Leichardt and Campbelltown. And let it be privately owned and controlled.

I’ve lost all hope of this changing. It’s possibly the reason Sheens was sacked 12 years ago, he wanted consolidation. If we sign a depth player they play in a Magpies jersey. We can’t possibly tolerate this for another 26 years.
I would not be surprised if the NRL withdraws their licence leaving Wests and Balmain to play RM.
Did you mind in the early years when the NRL players who didn't make first grade played for Balmain in the reserves? I'm guessing you didn't.

Because the West side of things are far to strong, and have control of pretty much everything,
A couple Of years ago I stated on the forum that Western suburb influencers were trying to take total control and kill the Tiger side of West Tigers and bring the Magpies Back, and I was called all kinds of names, and here it is West have to much control and someone is trying to do something about it.

GARY LEO.

They are not for WEST TIGERS
They are for Western
suburbs MAGPIES.
??? There is no corporate support . No NRL support . No Brand Value . No FAN support . No commercial support . For the return to wests magpies .
The COE is in concord FFS!
There may be some dinosaurs with desires for the days of Tommy , but that is not financially viable . Not even a little bit .
The nrl would take license back and re-issue to a new club. The COE contract would be null and void ie. the tenancy agreement with Burwood council .
That is pure paranoid delusions driven by old men with even older tribal bias’.
The Magpies was a dead brand , even before the merger . It had been saved multiple times , prior to SL. Even SL didn’t want them , despite thier vast geographical footprint.
Balmain had the brand ie. Tigers . It had/ has value . That was in 2000.
24 years on , and the wests tigers hold value , despite our losing and shithouse governance .
It’s literally why when news is slow the rags come up with this stuff . It drives clicks , papers , revenue for them . Why? Because “wests tigers” has real value.
There is no value in Balmain . There is no value in the Magpies. Those brands are dead . Like Blockbuster , or KB beer .
If people can’t see past thier bubble and echo chamber I dunno …..

I was / am a Balmain Tiger's lifelong supporter. But Balmain's wounds are all self inflicted. You can blame HBG and dark forces on the Magpies side all you like, but the controlling stake was gift wrapped to them through the completely inept financial management of successive Balmain Tigers leadership over the past 20 years. Had it been a JV with any club other than the Magpies I suspect it would have been goodnight Irene, game over, gonesky for Balmain. They actually demonstrated some goodwill by agreeing to keep a board seat and 10% interest by underwriting the debt. Balmain governance has been a sh*tshow for the past 20 years.

We have seen what happens with the supporter base when clubs that have been in the doldrums come good. Take a look at the Bulldogs this year. Hottest ticket in town and the Bankstown area buzzes every time they have a win. If Tigers start to go OK next year, watch all of the supporters get behind it. Yes, there will be fans wearing old Victa mower Magpies jumpers, and Black and Gold Saxonvale Wines Tigers jerseys up and down Mary Street, but there will also be a ton of Wests Tigers jerseys and all of the fans will be cheering for Wests Tigers.

I agree with most of this bar the name.
Balmain, for a brief period I think in the 1990’s changed its name to Sydney Tigers.
it might be time to revisit this in order to put this latest rubbish to bed.
The NRL in my opinion couldn’t give a toss on the name except for their “prized branding name, TIGERS.”
On the other hand, HB Group will want Wests retained, and fair enough too as they have funded this JV pretty much on its own.
One thing is beyond doubt, the timing of this announcement is ludicrous, ill conceived and potentially damaging to our club, footballers, coaching staff, fans and sponsors.

Balmain don't want to split - but voicing their objections im the media to HBG's self-serving rejection of the review recommendations has been done to place pressure on Romero & HBG to follow-through on their commitments to an independent WT Board... or justify why they've chosen to not do so!

It's strategic PR!
Interesting thesis Snidemeister.

I was a Balmain fan they died like the Maggies, just stfu i wish these dinosaurs would accept the reality its been 25 yrs.
I will say however whats going on at the HBG is also ridiculous, we are in danger of imploding they also need to get back in their box and do what they said they were going to do.
If the merger split i'd walk away i support Wests Tigers if they seek to exist im done.

I think you're overly simplifying what was a complicated situation. As I recall the "early years" had two separate teams both with unused first grade players. It was only when Sheens wanted to move to a single feeder team and Wests Campbelltown demurred that Balmain effectively became the sole feeder club. As I understand it Balmain were prepared to support a Wests Tigers reserve grade side.

No, I don't think I am. In the early years Balmain were the dominant member of the JV because they provided the lion's share of the money. Sheens wanted the NRL players playing reserve grade to play together to forge combinations with the players. That actually makes sense and as Balmain were stumping up most of the cash, the players played for Balmain. I couldn't argue that, I was merely correcting the poster's jaundiced view of the situation. Personally I'd be happy if the reserves played as WT.
