SMH Article 'We’ve lost faith in them’: Balmain consider shock exit from Wests Tigers merger

The thing is regardless of how big the junior nursery is or where it is, and how much money we have to spend, if managers and players don't buy what we are selling because of our poor leadership and their inability to run a successful organization, they will commit to other clubs.

This is not Wests v Balmain issue it's about making sure the right people are making the decisions in relation to the club - Wests/ Tigers - moving forward and it appears that the ones who have had time and have failed are having a hard time letting go in favour of preserving themselves.

Completely agree. And include some people who have been really successful in other parts of their life who are passionate Tigers supporters. Problem is, people who are reaaly successful, don't want to be associated with a group who are more broadly consdiered a bunch of muppets. Can you imagine someone like John Coates sitting in a boardroom, trying to keep a straight face, when across the table from him is the old Keith Richards wannaby muso who writes jingles in his spare time. Not a chance.

Not necessarily… so far it’s one person‘s opinion…… let’s not over react ..yet …
Trust me. Whether right or wrong. Its in the media. Thats the thing. Its not about my over reaction. It's the traction that it provides in destabilisation in the public forum which could affect our juniors who dont see what we see. They just play football and take care of number 1 first. It is an image our club that disservices the future. For all the wrong reasons. Hence im not over reacting. 25 years. Still in the same paradigm. It is a reaction but not for myself- but rather our future stars who cannot read inbetween the lines because they're next tattoo or ear ring is just as important. As much as a stable club.

Yep. There should be no Wests Magpies/Balmain Tigers moving forward, separate 'boards', separate 'chairmen' or any other kind of sub-organisations belonging to 'one side' of the joint venture that are now ancient history.

The whole organisation needs to be Wests Tigers from top to bottom. FFS formalise it already!

All grades play as Wests Tigers.

ONE board - PROPERLY APPOINTED based on merit, with the maximum term of appointments set at 5 years.

One Chairperson.

One CEO.

Because the NRL owns the marketing of the game, and therefore the teams/names/logos etc.
Imo Balmain negotiating from a position of weakness and sounds like the dream of a select few to see the Balmain Tigers live again.
And I come from a Balmain Tigers background. For Gods sake let’s just move on !
We have moved on.
Stapleton & Elias have come out stating Balmain RLFC do not support Gary Leo's propoaal
It's done... End.end.of story

I’m a Balmain tigers tragic and you’re delusional dude

Balmain has no juniors, no capital, no club house, nothing!

Everyone on that train should pss off seriously.

We should be grateful we have wests nursery now.

The game has changed - if Balmain ever came back we would be like Newtown jets playing in Reggie’s and probably the lowest team in that comp.

It’s over mate.

All we need is the old tragic Balmain and magpie people to flog off somewhere else, put on their old jerseys, and play with each other if they’re so desperate
I'm pretty sure they still have their own juniors

??? There is no corporate support . No NRL support . No Brand Value . No FAN support . No commercial support . For the return to wests magpies .
The COE is in concord FFS!
There may be some dinosaurs with desires for the days of Tommy , but that is not financially viable . Not even a little bit .
The nrl would take license back and re-issue to a new club. The COE contract would be null and void ie. the tenancy agreement with Burwood council .
That is pure paranoid delusions driven by old men with even older tribal bias’.
The Magpies was a dead brand , even before the merger . It had been saved multiple times , prior to SL. Even SL didn’t want them , despite thier vast geographical footprint.
Balmain had the brand ie. Tigers . It had/ has value . That was in 2000.
24 years on , and the wests tigers hold value , despite our losing and shithouse governance .
It’s literally why when news is slow the rags come up with this stuff . It drives clicks , papers , revenue for them . Why? Because “wests tigers” has real value.
There is no value in Balmain . There is no value in the Magpies. Those brands are dead . Like Blockbuster , or KB beer .
If people can’t see past thier bubble and echo chamber I dunno …..
Balmain BS. You people keep cutting open old scars. After 25 years. As a Magpies supporter, I accepted the JV in good faith. When Balmain dinosaurs kept throwing Wests under the bus I stayed committed to WT. Because it was always either a JV or nothing.

And now you guys are projecting that it's Wests attacking the other side? Balmain is broke and almost non-existent, yet former Wests supporters are still committed to the JV IN GOOD FAITH.

If the denied claim is true, then it's another bad faith act by Balmain. In the ludicrous delusion that Balmain replace WT in the NRL, I wouldn't support them at all, quite the opposite because it would be an act of bastardry and treachery of the highest order.

shhhh…. After another abysmal year on felid, which happens to be 100 year anniversary of the joint venture’s first entry into the LBGTQINRLA, this masthead can report there’s some serious rumblings out of the Western Tigers COE in sunny Perth. My insiders say there’s a debate at board level on what shade of orange the away kit should use on players socks. Make sure to tune your Nurolink™️ into my stream to learn what shade of orange is causing all the heartache”

We can pretend it is a beat up or gutter journalism or whatever, but the reality is this is not Blue Wiggle or some ex player who has gone rogue, it is a Director of the Balmain Tigers Footy Club. Ultimately it probably comes to nothing, but it does highlight the calibre of director we have in the JV entities. I don't know much about Gary Leo (apart from the fact he must write his own Wikipedia profile - check it out) but if his brain dead comments are anything to go by then he packed his head into one too many scrums.
We seriously need to get decent governance at this club. Just when you think we have made progress, guys like Leo and that muso from HBG pop up like cancerous bowel polyps. They have got no place in running a professional rugby league club anymore. I can't stand the Roosters, but if I am being honest with myself it is becasue I am more than just a bit envious of how they unlevel the playing field with the quality of their leadership at board level. Our board leadership is more like a bunch of small timers jostling for power at the local masonic lodge. As the (now treacherous) ex PM, Paul Keating, said "in the horserace of life, always back the horse named self-interest. At least you know it's trying!" 👏
Spot on

Yeah it’s the media … not going to argue with that… however that’s a little bit different to your original point I was responding to …

I don’t know how the media thing is ever going to change ..this story isnt even from News Ltd … juornos have no respect for the club … they would never pull such a story on most of the other clubs … the story seems to only be comments from Leo… should never have seen the light of day without furher input from the Balmain board … but the timing is amazing ..just when the Tigers are negotiating with multiple new players 😑

Either it's true and they've backpedalled at Olympic pace, or its untrue and the lying media is revealed once again.
Gary Leo is not Balmain and up until yesterday was unknown except for a few who were around in the late sixties and seventies.

I was / am a Balmain Tiger's lifelong supporter. But Balmain's wounds are all self inflicted. You can blame HBG and dark forces on the Magpies side all you like, but the controlling stake was gift wrapped to them through the completely inept financial management of successive Balmain Tigers leadership over the past 20 years. Had it been a JV with any club other than the Magpies I suspect it would have been goodnight Irene, game over, gonesky for Balmain. They actually demonstrated some goodwill by agreeing to keep a board seat and 10% interest by underwriting the debt. Balmain governance has been a sh*tshow for the past 20 years.
A lot of Balmain Tigers diehards forget that unfortunately & will blame the Wests side of the JV for everything, conveniently forgetting Balmain's financial ineptness. Wests financial ineptness in the 70s & 80s turned them from the "Millionaires" as they were Nicknamed in the 1960s being THE richest club to "Paupers".

In more recent times that has turned around & they are financially secure whilst Balmain made some very bad decisions financially compounded by some State Government planning decisions and find themselves skint.

Take your anger out on Balmain's management, they effectedly crippled the club leaving them to rely on some goodwill from the Ashfield Club.

What if they're goal is to sabotage our juniors? Sabotage our club. Our juniors are looking good. And young minds can be easily influenced. What if?
