I havent looked at that. But the finals series format needs to be changed. I know that people say every system has issues but ours seems to have way too many. I cant remember the issue with the AFL format. Is it that if 1st or 2nd loss in first week they cant meet in grand final? If thats the only issue I dont see a problem with that.

They don't have to go to Melborune a team who they have a shocking record against like us. they get to play in Sydney against Manly (if they win) where they will at least get 50% of their fans at the ground cheering them on.

The way it should be and the way the NFL do it is with seeding, if we win we play Manly if dragons win they play Storm, if warriors win they play storm if Broncos win they play Manly. So the only way we shouldn't be playing the storm is if Broncos win which would be fair enough

btw this thread is not meant to be negative about the tigers its negative about the stupid system we have

I both agree and disagree with your position.

As you say 4 has a chance of going straight through, but 5 is in a sudden death game. However to go straight through 4 has to beat 1 away, where as 1 plays 8 at home, a far easier game.

I think the Afl system is far superior (if not perfect), the crossover is as issue, as you say in the back end of the semies the odd teams have it harder in the more important game (1 plays 3, as opposed to 2 v 4), i think this although not perfect i can live with

Golden my first thought was here we go again too. but that NFL suggestion is a great one and something id never heard of before. so good work on the positive suggestion, now send it to the NRL.

One of the funny things about all these discussions over which system is better is that the current AFL system was used by the ARL in '95 and '96\. However, in '95 the ARL didn't use the "cross over" format, meaning that if the results had gone according to ranking the top four games from week 1 would have repeated in week 3\. They didn't, though, 'cause the Knights and Bulldogs made it through the first two weeks from 5th and 6th respectively.

They crossed over in '96, with the 2v3 loser playing the winner of 5v8 and the 1v4 loser playing the winner of 6v7\. In that season the Broncos finished 2nd but went 0-2 in the finals, but if they had won in week two they would have been playing the 1st placed Sea Eagles in week three.

The ARL had a "top 7" in '97, the Super League season. In '98, the first NRL season, when the two comps came together we had 20 teams and a five-week top ten finals series! The McIntyre System was then introduced in '99\. Ironically, the AFL used it from '94 to '99 and then scrapped it in favour of the ARL system from '96\. So BOTH codes copied each other!

The NFL system where they "re-seed" after each week has only been used for about five or six years, I think. Before then their system was as inflexible as the MS. They had it in concrete that, in each conference, the winner of 3v6 would play the #2 seed, and the winner of 4v5 would play #1.

the way i see it, is that as long as the top 1 or 2 teams get a clear advantage as reward for the whole years success then all the other finalists should be happy to receive some small reward in the first round and then just cop it sweet. Generally teams are too even to be worrying about if 4th finisher has more of an advantage over the 5th finisher when it comes to the 3rd round of the finals.

Agree there are flaws in system, but similar to what someone said earlier- Saints haven't got it easier. Looking at what's immediately ahead, would rather play in Sydney week 2, than up at Suncorp!!!..that's a big enough hurdle as it is for the Dragons!

The NFL system is very different to both the NRL and AFL, as they have 32 teams divided into two conferences, with each conference further divided into four divisions of four teams each. They only play 16 regular season games, with six of those against the three other teams in your division. At the end of the season the eight division champs plus four wildcards qualify for the playoffs. Because of the fact that you can often have weak divisions and strong divisions it's completely possible that a team can win 10 or 11 games and miss the playoffs while another team could win 8 and make the playoffs. As an example, have a look at the standings from their 2008 season:
