Spence

Gives it his all and toils hard, but wow the fact that he is in the starting line up speaks volume about our depth ATM. Where did he come from anyway? Correct me if I'm wrong but he's been playing NSW Cup the last few years and didn't exactly set the world alight there, let alone showing any signs he could handle FG.

That starting back row on Friday (Spence, Blair, Fulton) was destined for failure and I'm concerned Potter couldn't foresee this, especially considering the size of the opposing back-row (Pritchard, Williams etc.). It looked like 'Boys vs Men' out there in terms of power, size and strength.

He probably isn't anywhere near the top team but with the injuries he is being called upon. Hopefully he improves and does so quick.

what injuries? only galloway out in the forward pack… and gavet i guess.

Also Groat and Matt bell. Maybe include Anasta in there as well. That's a few from the start if the year

It reminds me of when you used to have Chris Patterson and Trent Runciman in the starting line up. Spence tries hard, so hard he is cooked after about 5-10 minutes. He's out of his depth but good on him for having a go. It's nice to occasionally see players who will never play NRL get an opportunity they have been working hard for all their lives so good luck to him.

It's definitely ahead of schedule for Spence. I haven't seen a lot to say he can't make it here. Doesn't appear a flashy player but does a job. Similar kind of player to Fensom I guess you could say. Pretty sure he played in the 20's along with Woods by memory. I don't forsee him staying in the team though obviously. Potter sees something in him though so don't discount him down the track.

Spence was more of a stand out in NYC then Santi was.

Santi was utterly owned by the Broncos NYC because of the size of their pack.

It stands to reason we would get worse from Santi in NRL

I've watched Spence for a long time and sorry he didnt cut it in NYC and NSW cup let alone FG. Has been given an armchair ride to FG by certain people who obviously dont know anything about football. Wests let go plenty of much better players than Spence. Talking about letting players go, Parramatta coped a hiding in the paper for the number of players they have let go. Tigers need to look at their dismal recruitment as well. Toutai, Loko, Pritchard, Hayne, Folau, Inu,Hoffman, Mullaney are some examples of players let go at an early age. There are plenty of others. Dont forget the players who will come back to haunt them on the weekend for the sharks. Retention and recruitment has been abysmal.

I regretted Gibbs leaving as well but i've hardly seen him make the field this year anyway.

He was carrying a few chronic injuries from a young age.

Hope Spence grabs this opportunity. So far none of the young ones have had a standout game.

I'm with MacDougall on this one. I was mystified when they dropped Fiffita. He was/is a monster close to the line. I figured at the time it was either an attitude issue somebody had a brain snap. Another one that got away.

A rather interesting first post considering you joined in 2009.

People are saying Spence is playing because of our injuries, but even with a horrible injury toll there ARE other options, are there not?

Akoula, Ava.S, Groat?

Surely they are all better options?

Look for now i'm willing to give Potter the benefit of the doubt with Spence. He obviously likes something about him and feels that with more first grade experience that he could turn into a handy player. He's only played in a few games in a side that is overmatched due to injuries. It's very hard to gather a young players strengths when under the pump for 80mins.

groat's just come back from a long term injury.. no point rushing him
ava and akoula have the same experience as spence.

im sure potter watches more state cup than any of us here… akoula or ava have only played off the bench whereas spence started the last two games. why do you want potter to drop a player who has played 3/4 games? out ava/aka/spence/sue.. he's decided to pursue with sue and spence, let's respect that decision and see if it works out rather than giving it 3/4 games. have some patience

Its hard to have patience when you look at the Miller situation, but anyway thats another story.
Hopefully Potters use of Spence - throwing him in the deep end so to speak - reaps rewards eventually

To me it looks like we are building depth hopefully with a view to recruiting experience
Long term depth interspersed with short term experienced players here and there….I dont think we can afford to do anything else.
