Spending a day in prison to scare them off a life of crime

Australia should pursue this idea more.

The idea is to let someone who is likely to goto prison experience a day in the slammer, so they know what there future holds for them if they continue a life of crime.

I think it's a great idea to combat crime.

I watched this yesterday.

That guy did not look 18 years old.

They also did this in American.
Called "Scared Straight"
Some clips on YouTube.
A bit more extreme than this 80s Australia attempt.

Have you got a link to Scared Straight? I can't find it on YouTube.

Are people that stupid these days

Most people know that they don't wanna go to prison.
Our whole system has gone woke , can’t punish anyone , because all they got to say I had a bad up coming or I got mental problems. Just look at these kids now released on bail more like than 20 times

Watched a program of a state in USA that built a jail in the desert .
all walls were canvas like tents .
guards in each corner in watch towers .
if you break out , they don’t chase you as the heat and distance from water will kill you .
if you touch another prisoner fight or attempt rape , guards are told to shoot you ,
no TV , no Radio , No internet , No papers .
just selected books to read , bunk beds , one small set draws ,
nastiest jail anywhere , but the town it was built for had a reduction on crime of like 80%
it had high , rape , and murder , this sheriff fixed the problem as nobody wanted to go there .
we have deserts , we have Canvas , we have steel pipe , we have metal roofing , we have fans , we have generators , we can fix it but unfortunately we have a shit tonne of week soft people who won’t do it , if I was in charge for one year I would have 6 built straight away , we have gone softer each year and that’s why our crime is up and our kids crime is off the chart

This guy has it all sorted in terms of crime prevention.

He has focused on breaking up the gangs of El Salvador.
He implemented a strategy to disrupt their finances, re-educate the youth, provide assistance to the poor, arm the security forces to round up the scum, extract said scum and imprison them all together away from the general population. He is rehabilitating those young enough to succeed with it and the rest are being removed from society for good. Sport and education are the focus of his rehab policies and he is now working on unemployment.
Crime rates are plummeting and he is so popular, he won a second term in a landslide in February of this year.

As always, its the stick AND the carrot.

You can't have hardline approaches without improved education and opportunities for young people, just as you can't have hug circles and a group affirmation session without consequences for actions.

You need both.

Western policy makers everywhere are shit at realising this.

How are their finances disrupted?

He enacted the Territorial Control Plan, a 7 phase assault on the problem. Phase 1 started in 2019 and is explained below:

"members of the National Civil Police (PNC) and El Salvador’s Armed Forces (FAES) gathered at midnight in the historic Plaza Gerardo Barrios in San Salvador as Bukele kicked off the first phase of his plan, dubbed “Preparation.” The first stage consists of heightening military and police presence in 17 municipalities determined to have the largest gang and crime presence. In attempting to retake gang-occupied territories, authorities seek to disrupt the financial strongholds of these groups through armed occupation and surveillance. The phase yielded 5,000 arrests nationally in the first two months of its implementation.

As part of the initial phase, Bukele’s administration also decreed a temporary state of emergency in the country’s penitentiary system, placing El Salvador’s 28 prisons under complete lockdown. Visitors were barred, inmates were confined to their cells, and a near-blackout of cell phone signals attempted to sever all communications within the prisons and with the outside world. Thousands of prisoners were relocated to more secure facilities." - AS/COA.org.

Yep, I was a lot of trouble growing up in Balmain. We had this territorial thing with the kids from Annandale and the wogs in Leichhardt. Kids of wharfies and factory labourers and criminals don't get much direction. But you work it out eventually and wise up if you're any good. A lot of blokes I know went to gaol because it was in their blood, a few got killed, but mostly, people work their own shit out. You have a choice.
