NRL 2025: Wests Tigers owners Holman Barnes Group bans three directors from venues as board war erupts

A dramatic boardroom spat has developed at the majority owners of the Wests Tigers after three Holman Barnes Group board members were sensationally banned from entering venues owned by the corporation.

A dramatic boardroom brawl has developed at the owners of the Wests Tigers after three board members were sensationally banned from entering any venue under the control of the Holman Barnes Group.
Staff were issued a club-wide email obtained by this masthead, which states that long-term board members Tony Andreacchio and Rick Wayde, plus fellow board member and ex-Cricket NSW CEO David Gilbert, were “excluded from entering the club and all club premises”.
The email doesn’t explain why the trio have been banned.
Aside from owning the Wests Tigers, the Holman Barnes Group operates three clubs including Wests Ashfield, Croydon Sports and Markets Club.
The email – sent by Holman Barnes Group’s executive manager of HR and culture, Michelle Nielsen, names the trio and states that they are excluded from entering “the club’s bars, restaurants, gyms, archives and carpark across all three Holman Barnes Group venues”.
“Should any of these gentlemen attempt to access the club or any of its facilities please notify the venue manager who should kindly ask them to leave,” Nielsen wrote.
“The venue manager should then report the incident directly to our CEO Simon Cook.”

As is director Tony Andreacchio.
And director Rick Wayde.

And director Rick Wayde.
Andreacchio and Wayde have previously served on the board.
Gilbert is the Holman Barnes Group’s representative on the Tigers board after sweeping changes to the structure of the club last year which resulted in chief executive Justin Pascoe and chairman Lee Hagipantelis being removed from their respective positions.
Gilbert and Andreacchio were uncontactable on Thursday night while Wayde would not comment.
However, it is understood the trio have taken legal advice over the decision, setting the scene for a legal bunfight involving powerbrokers within the Tigers’ majority owner.
Cook and Holman Barnes chair Julie Romero have also been approached for comment.
Romero replaced Andreacchio as chair in April.
It is understood the trio are on one side of the fractured Holman Barnes Group board, with three other directors aligned with Romero.
The Tigers have been embroiled in boardroom ructions for some time, in part because Holman Barnes Group directors were not on the same page.

The Tigers have been protected — to an extent — from the drama within their ownership, although Gilbert is currently a member of the revised Tigers board after the club underwent governance reform that led to former NSW premier Barry O’Farrell becoming the Tigers’ new chair.
The Tigers are currently in the process of forming a new board with the vast majority of independent directors after a review of the club’s structure recommended that the Holman Barnes Group give up their stranglehold on the club’s board. Only last week did the Tigers advertise for independent non-executive directors.

The fear is that drama within the Holman Barnes Group will filter into the Tigers’ operations, causing instability as second-year coach Benji Marshall and chief executive Shane Richardson attempt to steady a ship that has been sinking for nearly a decade.

It needs to be said - Wests Tigers will NEVER be successful while the self-serving Wests Magpies loyalist arse-hats are running the joint!!

More boardroom dramas as civil war erupts at Wests Tigers’ owners

A civil war has erupted at the owners of Wests Tigers after the Holman Barnes Group moved to cancel the memberships of three directors.
Staff at three of the venues owned by the Holman Barnes Group [HBG], including Wests Ashfield, have been instructed not to allow Rick Wayde, Tony Andreacchio and David Gilbert from entering the premises.

HBG is formerly known as the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club and is the main financial backer of the Wests Tigers, with Balmain Tigers RLFC owning a minor share.
Gilbert is also a director of the Wests Tigers, who are attempting yet another rebuild after earning three consecutive wooden spoons. The three directors are expected to contest the decision.

This masthead attempted to contact Wayde, Andreacchio and Gilbert, as well as HSG CEO Simon Cook and chair Julie Romero.

The latest development is yet another political skirmish that began when the factions were battling for control of Wests Tigers.

The NRL club has a long history of tension between the Wests and Balmain sides of the joint venture; as late as August, Balmain director Gery Leo called for Balmain to immediately sever ties with the Western Suburbs side of the merger.

Wests Tigers received a huge shake-up of its management and boardroom last year when long-time chief executive Justin Pascoe and chairman Lee Hagipantelis were removed from their positions following an independent review of the club.

The current Wests Tigers chair, Barry O’Farrell, will be expected to reapply for his position as the HSG also seeks to appoint new independent directors. O’Farrell, who has acted as chair in a previous stint at the club, is expected to go through a process that will require him to meet a skills matrix.
The Tigers are yet to announce a new major sponsor for next year, a position that has been filled by Hagipantelis’ firm, Brydens Lawyers.

There are concerns that the latest round of infighting is an unwanted distraction to the football program overseen by Tigers CEO Shane Richardson and coach Benji Marshall. The first wave of Tigers players returned to preseason training this week.

These people are just so weird. It is creepy that some of them have been at each other in some capacity longer than I've been alive.

I'm gonna hold fire (for now) on hate and vitriol towards Julie Romero until we understand what's going on. The HBG group voted unanimously to on the review and its mostly been implemented. There is likely a lot of manoeuvring over the appointment of independent directors. For the most part I don't care about leagues club game of thrones as long as it's kept at the HBG layer and out of the Wests Tigers boardroom. If its a case of the Chair and deputy chair trying to upset board independence, god help them.

I doubt directors would be banned without some kind of clear breach or violation of a code of conduct. I don't think you can just ban people, (let alone directors,) from access to a public venue in NSW just on 'vibes'. its quite an extraordinary step to take, It'll either be something entirely appropriate, OR the act itself is a smoking gun on any chicanery going on.

let's see what we discover.

Just on the banning. It is not a public venue. It is private, therefore you can ban whoever you want.

It is very petty though, unless they've been found to have done something untoward or illegal. We really don't know enough.

The worst thing is it's just more embarrassment for the club when we just had a season of relative peace and quiet from these types of articles.

This is why I love being a WTs member and staunch supporter,,,,Im in it for the excitement and the pain that comes with it...
If only some of the people involved in our club would start to act like adults and not schoolyard bullies throwing a tantrum everytime things dont go their way..
surely business acumen and principles should be at the forefront of this organisation because if it keeps going then there wont be an NRL team left to follow...
GROW UP AND SORT THIS SHIT OUT IN A BUSINESS AND ADULT WAY ....😡

Yes. Whilst she is in charge at HBG, Wests Tigers will not be able to move forward. The T-Rex of all dinosaurs holding our club back.

Once we have our west tigers board members selected and we have a completely separate board they can do what ever the he’ll they want. That review was the greatest thing to ever happen to this club!
Who appoints the new board members.

There was a level of concern when Tony A was ousted after the review that the new chair may not be committed to the findings. Given the three people who have been banned I would say that this is becoming more apparent. It's getting hard to believe that this organisation is capable of overseeing any success with Wests Tigers and if anything continues to keep us firmly placed at the bottom and vulnerable to clubs that are run with success as the motivator.

Denis must be feeling lonely as he was not mentioned.Julie has been a disaster at the club and has been sacked once only to be rehired and once again we are seeing disruption on the board involving her.HBG get your act together as YOU are the main problem at the club and always have been
