Terrell Mays defence

It was said on NRL 360 tonight that Bellamy had targeted May in defence last weekend and they found a heap of weaknesses in his game.

So if I take my bias hat off for a second and put to the side what Terrell has bought to the Tigers, could there actually be deficiencies in his game that would be found out in SOO?

It would be unfair if they just based it on the game vs the Storm. Many teams have been touched up by them over the years.

They say "may is great for supercoach", but they think he actually misses alot of tackles that he doesn't get penalised for in super coach because he comes back over the top with a "flop"... Which I don't buy into because you get penalised for flopping these days...

Lets assume it's not character and it is pure technical.

What am I missing when I am watching him play? Or what should I be looking out for?

The type of character I think Terrell is, he will use this as motivation to fix any deficiencies in his game. Perhaps an eye opener that could see him go to an even higher level.

Although somehow I feel he could do everything they ask and they still won't pick him for whatever reason. In another sport, I remember Australia not picking Glenn Maxwell in test cricket, saying he needed to "train smarter", whatever the hell that means. This was despite him being the best red ball cricketer not playing for Australia at the time.

He gets pushed back in defence sometimes but rarely misses tackles. Maybe that’s what they’re talking about but it’s clutching at straws really.
That kinda happens in most tackles with momentum. As long as it's not 5m a time... But Ive never noticed it.. will keep my eye out next match. Thx

I feel his first contact is poor he doesn’t seem to look to hit the opponent really hard he more tries to absorb the impact and then wrestle them, but in origin that might be found out

Back end of the Souths game was what we need from him. Straight ahead looking to punch through and rack up PCM.

Sometimes stops at the line looking to offload or crabs sideways.

He's got it in him to be even better and go from good to great.

Sione showing them all how it's done. Hard to handle that kid.

May had great late footwork at the line last few years with the Roosters. He hasn’t brought that to us. Not sure where it went?!

I think what they are really saying is Pole's not great in lateral D, neither is big Roycie and Giraffe has gone off the boil, so it's TDM and Api trying all game to plug the middle.

Look at the end of the day. If May is insisting on pushing the coach to play him long minutes he has to be effective for the entirety. It’s no good saying he is doing more because others aren’t unfortunately that’s his job.

I'd humbly suggest avoiding listening to NRL 360 opinions for a start. Sometimes footy is much less technical than people make out. The Storm might have targeted his concentration or looked to unsettle him early in the match, not necessarily anything technique based. Terrell May is an excellent player, so be looking out for how our forward pack performs without him in the side should he become injured or suspended.

"Forwards decide if you win or lose a game, and the backs decide by how much". With the exception of the Storm game, I don't think our forward pack has been done in by another team so far this season where we aren't getting enough chances or aren't getting up the other end of the field. That's even after we're not getting that many line breaks from our outside backs or fullbacks either.

In any case, he is by miles with Pole, Bula, Koroisau, and Turuva our best player. We need to trade Twal, Seyfarth for proper forwards!

All I can say is that May is a talent that needs a great coach to work on his deficiencies..Benji as great a player he was lacks what Bennett,Bellamy and co have to offer..
Not saying Terrell needs to leave but Benji needs to identify Mays deficiencies and make him work on them, the kid is to good to let go and I would love nothing more than May reps NSW because he is a dead set TALENT..

Why would you ignore that game though?

The Storm game has come home to roost …it was embarrassing and May had some struggles ( not that he was alone by any means) .. a lot of people here want to excuse it by saying …”give the Tigers a break .. it was against the Storm and they are really good “…

I didn’t see the Raiders or Sharks going in with that same mental attitude in the game before or after …and they showed that the Storm may not be the team they used to be

Having said all that The thing about May that I am annoyed with is that Stefano beat him out for the position in the extended bench ..that should never have happened but I suspect Bellamy has had some influence over Daley there

Imagine what you get from Big T, Fonua, and Royce if Benji brought in Webke or Wiki for some FR room coaching sessions.

Over the last three weeks the entire defensive structure has fallen apart because the effort areas aren't being met. For example: Twal and May were looking on last weekend when Bud ran through the gaping hole behind the ruck to set up a try. He ran through the gap where they were supposed to be applying inside pressure.

The defence falling off v St George was the first indicator that all was not good within the playing group. They weren't playing for each other, the scramble fell away and the line speed dropped off. The attitude prior to the game v Melbourne and the lack of desire shown by Naden and AD in the early try clearly showed that the playing group was not hungry, they just were going through the motions. The attitude improved a little bit v Souths but the foundation that we were buiding our season on, attitude, was still well below par.

May is doing his bit - and doing it well - but he is not immune from the issues that our team is currently suffering from.

I'm from NSW and have supported both sides at different stages, mainly due to not aligning with the NSW culture.

This time I'm fully on the Maroons and look forward to Daley's sad look in the losing Presser.

Laurie Daley commented that he observed a Josh King effort in their magic round game, he might want to watch Terrell May in the 21st Minute of the South game, he chases after every break, and his hit up in the 48th minute and offload, King hasn't got that.
