Why hardman Ennis says 'count me in' to Origin
Chris Barrett
May 13, 2011
This No.9 loves Origin footy as the refs let the game - and the physicality - flow, writes Chris Barrett.
>
Michael Ennis pines for the good ol' days - for free-flowing, rugged football when the whistle makes an appearance in a referee's mouth only on the most special of occasions. Which explains his love affair with State of Origin, an exclusive domain in the 21st-century game where penalties remain a rarity and a player who thrives on pushing the boundaries is considerably less accountable.
>
The Canterbury hooker and reigning NSW No.9 enters the final run-in to Origin season having endured a noteworthy past month. There were headlines over a contract clause that could have conceivably seen him walk out on the Bulldogs and join Nathan Tinkler and Wayne Bennett in Newcastle next year if he had chosen. And there was, of course, that fiery encounter with Nathan Hindmarsh at ANZ Stadium when an Ennis verbal assault prompted the usually timid Parramatta captain to go ballistic.
>
Both ended up in the sin bin and Hindmarsh labelled Ennis ''a grub''. In the aftermath of that game, there were questions raised about Ennis's discipline and, with NSW selection approaching, reminders about a crucial late penalty the Blues hooker gave away in game three of last year's interstate series.

>
Yet, as the 27-year-old approaches what appears to be a personal Origin square-off with Dragons hooker Dean Young at Sydney Olympic Park tonight, there is little doubt that, for any of Ennis's faults, he is exactly the brand of player NSW need to combat a seemingly impregnable Queensland.
>
The selection rumour mill would have you believe that both Ennis and Young are already pencilled into Ricky Stuart's squad for Origin I on May 25, a side that will be announced on Sunday. Presumably, Ennis would start, allowing Stuart to use the more versatile Young from the bench. The other candidate, Robbie Farah, looks likely to miss out.
>
Ennis, as genial off the field as he is competitive on it, is not an avid self-promoter and is far from taking selection for granted. But when asked he agrees the way he plays - much like probable NSW teammates Paul Gallen and Greg Bird - suits the rough and tumble that is Origin.
>
''There's no doubt that guys like myself and Gallen and Birdy … we enjoy the physical side of the contest and [we're] pretty competitive guys,'' Ennis said. ''I just think sometimes the referees without doubt go into games pre-conceived. But Origin is a different style of footy. It's known for its physical side of things and played at a much quicker pace. It's almost like the physical side of things is tolerated.
>
''In Origin they seem to put the whistle in the pocket and let the game flow. It's great to play end to end footy without being called up all the time for minor ruck incidents which they're just hammering at the moment, right or wrong. It's how [the NRL] probably should be refereed.''
>
In some ways Ennis was born 15 or 20 years too late. He is frustrated by the tendency for some present-day referees - under the stewardship of coaches Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper from this year - to blow more penalties than he says need to be awarded. He is quite often on the wrong end of them.
>
''I know when Bill refereed I always watched him and he didn't blow a lot of penalties,'' Ennis said. ''He let the game go. I'm surprised with him being in control of them now why there's so many penalties.''
>
Ennis is a traditionalist in other matters, too. He is an advocate of the bonding session - and not of the horse-riding variety - and says NSW must get the lead-up to each game spot on to upset the Maroons.
>
''I read Matthew Hayden's book and [former Australian cricket coach] Bob Simpson said to him, 'You learn more about blokes over a night having a beer than you do in the five days in the field','' he said. ''And it's true … game three last year, the second night [of the camp] we went and had a big dinner together and we all stayed together and we had a good few beers … we came out and it showed on the field . We were just a real tight group for that whole 10 days. We really should have won that game.
>
''It's just about us getting the right balance and ensuring our preparation is absolutely nailed in Origin. And also really just coming together and having a good time - I think that's a huge part of it. From there I think we're a real shot.''

//he is exactly the brand of player NSW need to combat a seemingly impregnable Queensland.//

They have got to be kidding themselves with that one, what's he going to do? niggle a hole in their defence?

"for any of Ennis's faults, he is exactly the brand of player NSW need to combat a seemingly impregnable Queensland"

Man, reading stuff like this just makes me furious! Do these peanuts not realise NSW have already been playing with this "grub" at No.9….....and guess what?.....NOT WINNING!!

Infact, it should be just the opposite. Give Farah another crack (I think Ennis has played pretty average in origin anyways, do they really think he deserves to keep the job?). At least Farah will add some spark to the No.9...and make 20 odd more tackles a game!

On a selfish note i want him to play for the Tigers all year but I feel sorry for Robbie. He was clearly the best Hooker in NSW in Buderus's last year of Origin but he was never going to get a look in in that year and then from out of nowhere Ennis pops up in the media spruking about playing origin. I didnt even know where this guy was coming from, he was a reject from the knights or something and was playing for Brisbane at the time?? Anyways thats not important. The point is, the media's been backing him and its been a love-love affair ever since. I really dont get it?

There are two things that Michael Ennis is good for:-

1\. Giving away stupid penalties, especially at critical times in a game.
2\. Late flopping onto a TACKLED player to get his tackle count up.

In games I have watched, he mainly gets noticed, BECAUSE HE IS AT THE CENTRE OF THE RUCK DOING NOTHING IN PARTICULAR!

It Makes you sick. Looks like another series loss for NSW. Dont these dopes relise that he was utter crap last year and did not do anything. That's what you get when you have brain dead fools in charge. :brick:

let ennis get picked.
then nsw lose another series.
the only people to blame will be the selectors.

don't listen to the media, pick the best player available for that position. 😛ray:

honestly it makes you wonder, when are the selectors, :crazy or who-ever it supposed to be in charge, realise that their decisions  , on who is picked for nsw team, are as dumb as dog doo doo.

until nsw come up with a consistent 1,6,7 & 9 combo that works well together, you may as well have origin great's from the past in this year squad to play in those positions.

What a tool..

"we should have won game 3 last year"… he had a significant bearing on NSW losing that game giving away his tough guy "made for origin" penalty!!

Concerns me the amount if "us" and "we" he used. He is already picked in those comments....

Oh well I go for Qld anyway, not sure why it bothers me other than he IS a grub

You forgot -

3\. Running away when threatened.
4\. Cheap shots.
5\. Built for origin selector crawling.

I am not on Twitter and have no desire to do so. Those that are please have your say on the story.

Speaking of late flop MM, I disagree slightly.. I think it's more late cheap-shot to the unprotected back of players. Watch tonight how often he comes in third or fourth man and hits the attackers back. I thought they brought a rule in for this to protect players??!

I hope he opens his mouth like he did with Hindmarsh… Blokes like Matt Scott & Sam Thaiday will teach him some manners!!!

C'mon Ricky... Pick Ennis for Origin!!!

This sort of of 'journalism' should be called for exactly what it is….a blatant lie!

It hasnt been his on field performances that have put him in the frame, it is his relationships with the journos that have helped push forward his case.

Even last night on the footy show when Benji pushed Robbies case, it was met with unenthusiastic support from all panel members even though the audience cheered the motion.

Farah may have the public behind him to an extent but with the media and experts, including FOG's, against his selection he really will be pushing poo up hill I fear.

I am afraid Ricky and Bob Fulton dont have the brains to pick the right team for origin. They need more attacking players. QLD are going to score 3 tries at least but with a hooker like Ennis or Young we will struggle AGAIN.

Lets hope Robbie carves up the bunnies tomorrow night to show the selectors (who would of already made their minds up) what they're missing out on!

I'm expecting Robbie to steer us to a 50 point win tomorrow night. He must run and kick the ball more but not hog it. Just create chances and show how he can dominate a game.

If he doesnt recieve selection then he can still hold his head high and will have helped his club.

Graham Murray, another 'grub' supporter:

"With regards to my other selections, I am a big fan of Robbie Farah at hooker but I think he is a hell of a lot better player for the Wests Tigers than he is at rep level. He is a bit like the Kiwi team – they need a month in camp to peak.

He takes time to get his confidence with those around him … but Origin is a bit different; you need to hit the ground running. Michael Ennis will get straight into it. If he gives away penalties I would be disappointed but if he niggles a bit that could be a good thing. Queensland will definitely talk about him."

I’m choosing to ignore this rubbish. Lets hope the dragons give it to him tonight.
If he gets selected for origin game 1 and NSW lose, surely that’s his and a few other players LAST chance at origin level.

What a crock. If they would of kept in in 09 instead of dropping him like a hot potato then NSW will be better off today.

What a blooy cop out.Im sick of all of the excuses.

I actually think there is a bit of merit to those comments.
