Wests Tigers Cubs opened their two match tour of New Zealand with a 48-12 victory over Wellington Orcas in Wellington yesterday.
The Cubs tour comprises of the best U17 players from the Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies Harold Matts and SG Ball teams.
Former first grade players Andrew Willis and David Brooks are the co-coaches of the Wests Tigers Cubs team.
From this year’s Wests Tigers squad, the likes of Liam Fulton, Bryce Gibbs, Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall, Chris Lawrence and Simon Dwyer graduated from the Cubs program.
The opening match against Wellington was called off early due to the atrocious weather conditions after Wests Tigers led 32-6 at half-time.
Tryscorers for the Wests Tigers Cubs were Shane Lalogafau, Kyle Lovett, Daniel Vasek, David Nofalouma (2) and Daniel Alterio.
Curtis Sironen, who showed his potential for the Wests Tigers U20s team late in the season, kicked five from eight goals with Alterio also landing a goal.
“Our forwards dominated the middle period and our edge runners were regularly finding holes,’’ Willis said.
“Some of our fresher players had a bigger impact on things, especially one of our smaller forwards in Luke Bonnell.
“The second half we had a very good kick/chase and pinned them in their corners. We put pressure on them with heavy defence especially early in their sets to force some costly errors.
“Curtis Sironen had a solid game and led from the front. David Nofaluma, who is AN Australian Schoolboy player, was solid at fullback in the poor conditions. Shane Lalogafau was also impressive in scoring a double.
“A few of the players from the opposition have already been earmarked for NRL Clubs including Penrith and Melbourne, so it was a better side than the score line suggested.
“Opposition centre Jeremy Hawkins is off to Melbourne next year and was awarded Man of Match by the Cubs."
