Tiger youth behind Lawrence shift

Sat 06 Jun, 2015, 7:44am
By Jack Brady, National Correspondent, NRL.com

Veteran Tiger Chris Lawrence has revealed his recent shift from centre to the back row was a way to bulk up his inexperienced team's defence, and allow other rookies a chance to play out wide.

David Nofoaluma and Tim Simona looked on from the sideline injured in the club's 27-20 loss to the Titans, with Delouise Hoeter and NRL debutant Nathan Milone making up the Tigers' centre pairing, and Lawrence said the opportunity to play in the forwards for the first time since 2007 is a transition he is thoroughly enjoying.

Scoring their first try in 167 minutes when Lawrence crossed for one of his two tries for the game midway through the second half against the Titans – his first tries in almost a calendar year – the 26-year-old said playing in the back row gives him the opportunity to have a greater role in attack.

"I played in the back row a bit when I first came into grade. [Former Tigers coach Tim] Sheens put me in the back row, lock, five-eighth, on the wing and everywhere so it's been a while I suppose and I'm definitely enjoying the new role," Lawrence told NRL.com.

"It's a bit different being one closer to the middle so obviously you have to do a bit more of the tough stuff and a few more tackles so I just have to get my body a bit more used to that with the extra work.

"With me being one of the experienced guys I have to take on extra responsibility. With there being a lot of young guys in the squad, it means it's up to me to lift my game defensively."

Tigers coach Jason Taylor was complimentary towards Lawrence, who has appeared to make the transition seamlessly.

In his two games in the forwards Lawrence has averaged 124 metres and 31 tackles with Taylor adding the 165-game Tiger was someone his teammates "could look up to".

"Chris is such a professional. I've never seen many guys in my career that are as professional as he is about preparing themselves every week for a game of footy," Taylor said.

"He's an absolute credit to himself and we're lucky to have him at the club leading the way in that regard."

As Lawrence makes a fist of his positional change, the Tigers are still looking to overcome their recent attacking woes having lost six of their past seven games and their last four straight.

Only scoring an average of eight points per game in their month-long losing streak, Lawrence said their attack is a work in progress considering the relative rawness of their halves.

While the Tigers did manage to score 20 points against the Titans, three tries in eight minutes at that, Lawrence said realistically the side can't play well for small segments and expect to come away with a win.

"It's a new system for us this year where everyone has had to learn things from scratch," Lawrence said.

"There's always going to be games where it doesn't click and the last couple of weeks it hasn't. The back end of the [Titans] game showed we were starting to find our form again and we know we're going in the right direction."

He did really well. I am glad they finally woke up and moved him out of the centres. He was finished there and embarrassing there for the past 3 years. Last night he was excellent, credit where it is due.

If he can continue to perform like that, well he can be a valuable player for the next 18 months. Unlike the total hinderance he has been on the paddock for the past few years.

I like the sentiment out of the forum, everyone hopes he can take his game back to a consistent high-quality level in a new position.

We all thought he was going to the backrow eventually, right?

Well, I think the writing has been on the wall since the first game of 2013 vs Newcastle when he couldn't handle Gagai. I suspect the move was resisted b/c of depth issues (which were highlighted on Friday night) and to some extent Lawrence wanting to prove he still had something to offer the backline.

I think Taylor realized when Canberra targeted him with a kick that his centre days were over and he has only been used there out of necessity since. I reckon he still has much to offer our team in coming years.

I agree Larry…..he bangs hard in defense and hits a mean line.

He naturally plays the game that JT has tried to make Sirro play.

Looking every bit like a Ryan Hoffman type player now.

What I don't get is why he couldn't get back and run onto the ball like that as a centre even just occasionally

Good call….he did play like Hoffman.

Great to have some zip and menace on that edge!

I think pretty much everyone on the forum was wanting him there for some time now.

Think we missed his defence in the centres though, but he may not have scored the tries he scored either

We all love the guy and he is a professional. With his move to the forwards he can look at how Mitch Aubusson has excelled at the Rorters this year in particular. We need you Chris as I doubt there will be any decent signings for a while!

Would be happy with a resigning if he keeps playing like he did last night. Reduced pay of course, but he certainly would be our 1st/2nd best second rower with weekly performances like that. Sounds like the bloke adds so much to our team culture also. JT isn't the first coach to talk about him that way.

Chris played well , the move was always coming as his days in the centre were over , a great club man that can prove his worth again during the remainder of this season , I think he will go very well there and play next season there as well, or off the bench if we do purchase a back row player , this will also make the other young guys stand up and try harder to force there way in to the team , the move could be a win win

Being a self-confessed confidence player I hope Chris can continue that quality into a week-in, week-out type of performance.

We certainly need it.

Will be interesting to see how this goes over the remainder of the year… My first thought is guys like Wiki and Lewis made the transition and I think Chris is as talented as they were while playing in the backs.

The toughest decision we will need to make will be in the off-season to gauge whether it is worth the risk re-signing Chris beyond 2016, and risk losing players like Funaki; Liolaveve; B Sironen & M Woods.

Hope he gives it a good crack... 2 Meat Pies would have gotten his confidence back on track!

All I will say is,it shows Chris is a talented and versatile Rugby League player, overcoming a horrendous injury and having the guts and forte to continue on….I hope he keeps absolutely killing it in the backrow....

Yes I also hope he continues to kill it in the backrow, god knows we need him to based on our recruitment!
