Tigers coaching contradictions

Hi guys

I've been thinking about this for a while and I wonder if any of you agree?

We all agree that the Tigers play seems mostly quite "unscripted" this year, a lot of the time I feel (as an old Balmain fan) that Sheens has taken the Alan Jones philosophy of giving the ball plenty of air and eventually that will lead to holes being created and tries scored.

Back in 05, we seemed to have a whole book ofccreative set plays, bodies in motion, well rehearsed, even revolutionary set pieces.

In a sense we "outsmarted" our opposition on many occasions.

So maybe we need to get back to this?

Also I think a big problem, aside from our back line playing too flat this year, is that there just doesn't seem to be enough speed and punch out wide, look at the game against the Broncos again and you will see how much harder the Broncos backs ran the ball back.

The biggest contradiction however seems to be that while we have this flamboyant, unstructured attack Tim seems to like having "thinking" forwards, what I mean is that guys like Ellis, Blair, Fulton, Heighnington, probably even Galloway (who seems to have simmered down a lot), aren't rip and tear guys who want to smash the opposition, I sometimes feel like our forwards would rather challenge the opposition to a game of chess.

I want the Tigers to turn this around, I want forwards who get in there and bash and barge, create space and have more untapped mongrel.

I want the backs to be smarter, play with more structure, play smarter (kicking as well), and have some more pace and punch.

What do you think?

The ruck was so much different back then, its where all our attack began.
More wrestle today means a slower ptb….
Forwards dominate (which we are light on) and if you dont bend the line you go nowhere without a good kicking game ( which we dont have)

Helmesy, what are you trying to say?

I guess I'm saying we really need to have a rethink of the whole team/game plan.

We did well in 05 but it appears we never seem to have the right team to capitalize on the current rules.

I agree with innsaneink's comments on the ruck by the way.

It seemed to me that the WTs spent more time attacking with the ball around the ruck against the Broncos than in previous games. There looked to be less emphasis on Benji running loop runs around the field in fact I recall more one out running in the ruck than usual. That is my impression of our attack being at the game, haven't had the time to watch the replay. Woods sticks out as a player who can take the ball up and make ground than most of our forwards. Losing Galloway for most games and Ellis hasn't helped although Bell has a dig and it would be good to see him get some more game time. It looked as though there was less flamboyance in our attack last Friday night at least that was the impression I was left with.

Difference now to 2005;
- 05 no injuries
- 05 props Skando, Payten, Gibbs, Lafranchi ( all fit, no injuries )
- Brett Hodgson
- 05 we had a halfback ( in career best form)
- team harmony
- 05 Robbies ego hadnt developed yet
- game was refereed diffently at the ruck which allowed fast play the balls
- other clubs introduced measures to slow the ruck
- we have not evolved
- 05 we had Scott princes kicking game
- 05 we had Brett hodgsons goal kicking
- 05 Benji had less pressure because of above

I can keep going but it's really depressing me just thinking of it…..

the game has slowly been evolving away from the quicker style of '05 and its been a wrestle'a'thon for the better part of the last 5yrs. we still have not adapted to this style with sheens persisting in games with small / light benches and lighter packs overall. lastest recruiting of another second rower in place of two front rowers is killing us with the injuries compounding our losses. i also think our attacking plays has become a little cumbersome and predictable of late, we need something new in this department. benji's trying hard but we cant just rely on him for all things attack and kicking game. biggest loss to our team from what ive seen so far is definitely lui.

Whatever the tigers game plan is/was over the off season would have rapidly changed or been altered due to the run of bad luck with injuries and suspensions so far.
no team can play consistently and work on combinations, set plays etc when each week we have had a different team taking the field.
With some luck with injuries and Farah back on the park the combinations will build, the set plays will pay off, the wide floating balls and the short balls will hit their mark and the wins will come.
