Tamou: Tigers in a groove but a lot to prove against top teams

Wests Tigers skipper James Tamou insists the side has improved but achieved little ahead of their next mission to claim their third straight win for the first time under Michael Maguire this weekend.

While the external crowd behaviour fallout from the joint venture's win over the Panthers continues, the side's recent 3-2 record after a slow start to the year is more reason for Tamou to be up and about.

It was Tamou's former coach Ivan Cleary, who was subjected to crowd abuse during his first visit back to Leichhardt Oval last week, who last guided a Wests Tigers outfit to three consecutive wins in 2018.

However, in their way at Bankwest Stadium on Sunday are the Eels, who have won the last six clashes between the clubs.

Tamou is wary of the next month of the Telstra Premiership if the Tigers are to push on and challenge for the finals.

"There was a lot to get up for with the game just gone – the Panthers on top of the table and some of the players here are ex-players like myself," Tamou said on Monday.

"So we can't get too ahead of ourselves after the weekend. But the pleasing thing was going back-to-back and what that does for our confidence moving forward.

"We've had a few tough months, different positional changes and unearthed a couple of debutants but I think we're starting to find our groove.

"We've got to keep growing, we can't just walk around thinking we're going good because we're not, but we're on the right path."

After their meeting with the Eels this week, the Wests Tigers will face the Storm and Rabbitohs before finishing the State of Origin period with a bye.

"You want to test yourself against the top teams," Tamou said.

"The way we're going it'll be a big test for us. It doesn't get any easier."

Meanwhile, Tamou said his former coach in Cleary will "shrug" off taunts directed at him during last Friday's win after the Leichhardt Oval crowd turned on the ex-Tigers coach.

Tamou expected his former Panthers teammates to "not forget" the result when the two clubs meet again in round 24 but for now has switched his focus to the Eels.

It's understood the Wests Tigers have received requests from the Panthers to investigate claims several visiting fans were also targeted on the suburban hill.

While nothing has formally come of the internal investigations, Tamou believed the overall rivalry building between the two clubs was only good for the game.

"It's one of those things, good for the NRL and the fans to get involved like that for the rivalry," he said.

"Obviously they were a bit depleted and all that but they'll use it next game in round 24.

"They'll use that as fuel. They'll take the loss hard and look to go forward again. We'll have to be ready for that when the time comes."

Doueihi says confidence is on the rise at Wests Tigers

Claiming back-to-back wins for the first time this season, including defeating the top-ranked team, has given Wests Tigers a massive confidence boost at the halfway stage of the season — according to Adam Doueihi.

Michael Maguire’s men became the first team to beat Penrith in 2021 with a 26-6 in Round 13, and Doueihi says they’re now ready to challenge another top four side when they face Parramatta on Sunday afternoon.

“It was good to beat the team at the top of the table,” Doueihi said.

“To be able to knock them over on our home court was a big achievement for us and it was our first back-to-back win of the season.

“The boys got a lot of confidence out of that and we’re going to take it into this Sunday against Parra — they’re a strong side so we’ll have to be on again.”

The Eels sit third on the ladder with 10 wins from 13 games — including a 40-4 thrashing of Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Wests Tigers have already faced their western Sydney opponents this season, with the Eels claiming a 36-22 triumph on Easter Monday.

“Parra are another challenge for us — they’re coming off a good win — so they’ll be raring to go against us at their home ground at Bankwest,” Doueihi said.

“We need to put in a good performance. Every week is a big test for us. We’re not in the top eight at the moment, so there’s plenty of improvement.”

Despite sitting 11th on the ladder following 13 rounds, Doueihi is confident his side is progressing and confident they can make a run for the top eight over the final 11 games.

“We’re heading in the right direction,” he said.

“We’ve changed some things in our defensive structures and attacking wise, and we’ve got the right combos going now. The more wins we get, the better we’ll be.”

Wise words from Tamou, we had a good win against a badly depleted side and the penalties and six agains would have killed us against a good side. We have continued to improve, and thats good, but we are miles behind the good sides where our backline is concerned. AD is good, Laurie is good, but are not even close to the top centres and fullbacks in the game. As for the rest of the backline, I doubt they would get a decent contract at other clubs,. Thats the reality,.

You have made a reasonable and honest summation sleeve, however,I think that the halves combination of Brooks and Mbye should stay as long as we are getting good ball to the backline and making ground in our attack...Some of the defense still needs improving, but overall many of us can see the improvement within this team the last few weeks...As they play more and irrespective of the opposition I can see them maturing and taking in what they are learning this year...I look forward to next year immensley and I think if they keep playing like they have,a crack at finals this year isnt out of reach...

The two glaring standouts in those articles are, Parra have beat us the last 6 times we played, and Madge has never won 3 games in a row at Wests Tigers, 2 really damning statistics that need fixing this week

Before the game everyone’s said we have no chance even against their NSW cup team, and we should be happy to lose by less than 20.
On the top of thatthe ref gave them at least one penalty per possession, he is done everything to help them win the game.
Their “stars” Kikau, Crichton, Edwards, Staines, Burton were totally outplayed, and looked worse than any WT player!

They said in commentary of our game V Penrith that we had not beaten Penrith at LO since 2000?

History is always ready for change:joy:
