TIGERS SUPPORT CHERRY AUCTION
By Wayne Cousins
Wednesday, 21 October 2009
Players from the Wests Tigers and the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers made a spectacular entry in delivering the first box of cherries for summer at the Sydney Markets today.
Now in its 30th year, the annual Cherry Auction has become an institution on the Sydney Markets calendar.
Keith Galloway, new signings Junior Moors and Geoff Daniela, joined Willie Mataka, Lee Bennett, Sean Meaney and Eloni Vunakece for the big charity event.
The players jumped into a Wests Tigers truck to present the first box of cherries to Laura Dundovic, Miss Universe Australia 2008.
The first box of cherries sold for $25,000\. Proceeds from the festivities go to Variety, The Children’s Charity, to help purchase medical equipment at the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.
Channel 7 show Sunrise made live crosses to the markets with weather presenter Fifi Box trying her luck at the Wests Tigers Pass the Ball board.
The free exposure on Sunrise is invaluable for Wests Tigers and further highlights the club as 'the Game's Good Guys'.
TIGERS Leagues Club will operate a club at the Sydney Markets from March 2010.
