A massive underwater volcano that erupted just before sundown Friday sent waves several feet high smashing into the shores of the Pacific island nation of Tonga and triggered tsunami advisories from Australia to Canada, including the U.S. West Coast.
I pray for the safety of anyone affected by this event.
With all the upheaval of COVID, natural disasters is the last thing people need to contend with.
Hang in there people.

Yeah, saw the photos.

Intense!

Actually have been there. Pretty sure that the white building is the royal palace. That is the main street of the capital with water running through it.

Hopefully there is no significant damage.

Absolutely insane the magnitude of this event
Makes you realise how vulnerable these tiny beautiful islands are dotted in the middle of the Pacific

Yep. Pretty bloody awful.

So what was that everything that I needed to know?

If Scomo was on there he would no doubt be accused of big noting himself or politicizing the situation.

What I do know is that Scomo and Jacinda have communicated and have agreed to send help, which I believe is currently on the way or being prepared.

Fair dinkum mate we are talking about the bloody ABC after all, of course they are going to pursue the lefty greeny angle.

Here’s another that wants to politicise every frigging thread. Take it to the politics thread and take your ..

Um, no. It was a statement since deleted but anyhoo…my point stands.

Sadly Australia will likely do bugger all to help the people of Tonga or other Pacific nations. At least not until after the election. This government still hasn't spent a cent to bushfire support to benefit RFS or the people impacted by Black Friday etc. They definitely don't care about people in other countries unless there's something to be gained, sadly.
NZ will no doubt pick up the slack and be the leaders in the Pacific they've always been.

This is a huge tragedy and the impacts will be far-felt. 10% of Tongans worldwide live in Australia, and many will have family members impacted by this tragedy. I'd like to see the NRL setup a pre-season Tonga vs Samoa friendly at Olympic Park as a fundraiser to help those impacted. Will be a great show of support and solidarity to a code that relies so heavily on Polynesians these days.

Sell tickets for $20 each and get 80k people out to support the cause (or however many are allowed to attend given state of restrictions at that time)

100% correct. Need we be reminded of the concern shown a few years back with the whole water lapping at their door comments and who was in that party of giggly 3?
Anyway. Fingers crossed they pull their fingers out of their bums and pull their weight in getting our islander friends back on track.

They have committed a dismal 1 million dollars and some flights to review the damage. Shameful.

Hardly surprising is it? If only Hillsong had a presence in Tonga

Scamo is saving the real money for something important like pork barreling in the coming election.
