WHILE most footballers complain of the torture of an off-season, they can at least be reassured that it could be worse; Wests Tigers' new recruit Lote Tuqiri's off-season will consist not of a long grind, but a long flight.

Tuqiri, once named TBA by Queensland to find a way around a loophole during his first stint in the NRL with Brisbane, will today find another quirky selection story when he is named for the Tigers for their round-one clash against Manly next Monday while he is about 39,000 feet above the Middle East.

Tuqiri will land in Sydney tomorrow morning and if all goes to plan he will line up on the wing four days after meeting his new teammates.

After being released from his contract with English rugby union outfit Leicester Tigers early, Tuqiri played his final match for the club over the weekend, and a few hours after the final whistle, sent a text message to chief executive Stephen Humphreys which confirmed that he would be fit to play.

''He feels quite confident that he can hit the ground running,'' Humphreys said. And so this morning, Tuqiri will step into business class (or first class if there is a spare seat), and rest his limbs and locks until he reaches Sydney.
