Ugly, almost undeserved wins

You got to love them. It was the reason the Tigers missed the finals in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009\. They couldn't find any of them. We yearned and prayed for a team that found ways to win no matter how badly they were playing. From 2006-09 we were often the better team and lost games

IN 2010 we were the club that won the most games by 1-6 points overall. I think we had the most wins of any club when behind with 20 minutes to go. I think many people are forgetting we had a lot of ugly wins in this same period of the season. Our football wasn't much better this time last year. The games that no one will remember in September, but mean a hell of a difference to your overall season. Anyway, it's a nice change after watching years of the Tigers finding ways to bomb close games.

I know there is heaps of issues, and we look a mess at times. However I still see lots of similarities to last season. The 4-5 game winning streak will come later in the season if we keep our troops and our attitude is there. Last nights game was a 4 pointer in a sense, striking a big blow to a direct opponent in the race for the finals. Sure people are filthy with some of the aspects of our play. however give me an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.

Excellent post Eddie and one i agree with in full.
These type of games are the ones we always lost up until last year when we started to win the "ugly" games. I remember some real shockers last year such as scraping past the woeful sharks by 2 points and also that last minute game stealer against the Broncos when we played terribly throughout the match. Those 2 games alone made the difference between finishing top four or towards the bottom of the top 8\. As Phil Gould said on the roast a couple of weeks ago, teams can win 50% of their games up until july then get on a roll by stringing a few wins together and entering the finals in form and ready to peak.
As we are blessed by the NSW selectors not picking apart our team we should really be aiming to grab some ugly wins over the origin period without really playing our best footy while the top teams battle as their stars fatigue over the representative rounds.
I too see not much difference to how we are placed now compared to this time last year.

Yes, a win's a win - doesn't really matter if it's by 1 or 51, you still get 2 points and your opponent gets zilch. A good thing about this one was that we won our first Golden Points match since 2007 ( according to the SMH), so maybe the tide's changed for 2011\. Another good thing was the performance of Tim Simona, who may have solved the centre problem.
It will be interesting to see how the Dragons go with 2 of their big guns missing. No doubt the Media will be sympathetic.

Where its nice to win ugly, it has to be remembered we were playing at home,we had a lions share of possession and playing a team that is a mid packer at best and to win in xtra time was only very marginally better than a loss.

I really cant see where this winning streak is going to come from, we have had the best draw of any team in the NRL to date and now are coming into the hard section of the draw. Call me pessimistic but our season could be dead and buried in a months time on what this team has shown this year.

You cant go from the cellar to the penthouse in a week. Without Sheens actually biting the bullet and actually dropping a couple of key players nothing will happen. We have issue with our no7 and issues at the back and our forwards are putting in effort without any real strategy.

Time will tell if Iam just being negative but I just cant see a 2010 revival on the cards in the near future

We don't have to draw graphic pictures of how we get the two points . A 50 point point hiding is still worth the same as a scratchy 1 point win .

the tigers have also learned how to play catch-up football - although they play all all to often.

look at our LOSSES this year.

barring the one against the dogs, and the head scratcher against the gold coast we fought back from a lost position in the other games, and showed fight. We mightn't have got the result, but we didn't get embarrassed.

We are yet to be flogged this year, and have dished out floggings ourselves.

I think back to the cowboys game, the brisbane game, the manly game in rd 1, the canberra game where we won by 35-22 (much like the cowboys did this week to them) all from last year as games the 09, 08, 07 etc tigers teams would have given up on.

weve had two like that already this year - penrith and newcastle. It shows a maturity within the team to play out the full 80.

Yes realize that Was making the point about the 2 points on the table GNR

The team knows they are not producing what they are capable of. Heighno said it was a mess everytime they got to the Knights 20 metre zone but when they finally do get the communication and cohesion right, look out.

Yep, as I was reading the enormous amount of 'geez how did we win that, we really suck' type comments on here last night I was thinking how much this reminds me of last year when we won quite a few games 'ugly'. Hope you are right, Eddie, and we can go onto the same, or even greater, heights as last year. Time will tell - I think the injuries have been a bit worse for us this year, though.

Awesome initial post Eddie!!!

Couldnt agree more.

In fact I think we look a better side than this time last year.

I still think we can still give this a big rattle.

At the end of the year when the big sides are tiring due to rep duties, our boys should be fresh and coming into form.

Get on us now cos after we smash the Warriors on the wknd we are gonna pay a lot less than the 11-1 that we are now!!!

Giddyup!!

great post eddie.
i am with you with the winning ugly theory. if they can win these games they have lost in the past (bar '10) and get things together when it really matters then they can give it a shake.
to be honest, i have considered them lucky to be in the 8 for a while but they are and if big lote can get better then i am hoping for a lawrence return just at the right time to get all our best back on the park come the big games…
we have had a lot of injuries and changes to the side thus far, so hopefully it will all even out and we will all have a lot to roar for again. :sign:

I love loyalty, but do people go out to the games, this team is playing busted big time and we have had a dream draw. We also have more than our fair share of turmoil and their are a few players who are pi..ed off. Over the next few weeks we will be lucky to bag a win.

Sorry but its true lets not dream

I agree with Supercoach - we are playing busted - this is not a repeat of last year.

I think you'll see what happens when we play a decent side away from home this weekend.

We are playing poorly however I think we can turn it around reasonably easily.

Farah gets into form and stops hogging it. Moltzen gets a spot in the team and gets into form. Lui or Moltzen comes good at 7\. Our younger forwards pick it up a little (Woods stops dropping it & Fifita keeps playing the way he is). We get Lawrence and Tuqiri back.

I don't think all of those things happening are really that far off. If they do we can go from poor to really good.

THis is why we will be in the finals again this season. Winning these games by 1-6 points does show a degree of character and mental toughness. Grinding out wins the middle of the season have become a strength of this squad and long may it continue. Ok, we were not great at times today. However to come from 20 points back, on a heavy Auckland track, no team in the league is capable of that sort of comeback. THis could be the big win thats spakrs on to one of these 4-5 match winning runs im talking about.

Lol, interestingly enough we didn't record many ugly wins in 2005 either. Our losses were generally by big margins and our wins were always exciting, free-flowing game where we would pile points on teams. Fortunately, we consistently piled points on teams and ended up winning 18 games throughout the year.
