So season 2024 has been a train wreck, we all acknowledge that - even the most rusted on amongst us.
We have all but secured a third spoon in a row despite possessing a squad with the highest concentration of former and current Internationals, State of Origin players and those with NRL finals experience in our 25 year history.
Is it our worst year ever?
We are currently on track to break some very unwanted club records and weve already broken one:
WORST LOSING STREAK - The NRL acknowledges this as the most losing weekends in a row i.e. the bye rounds stop a losing streak. Our longest losing streak was 7 set back in 2013 rd's 4-10 and matched in 2023 rd's 18-24.
We have already broken it this year and set a new record of 8 in rd's 5-12. With our current streak at 7 and with two more games before the bye (Souths and Manly), it is very likely we may break it again
MOST CONSECUTIVE LOSSES - This is simply the most amount of games lost between wins. Our record is 12 set across the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023. Id rather count the most consecutive losses within the same season though as there are many variables that can skew a result over 2 seasons, such as team and coaching lineup changes during off-seasons. The worst therefore, during the single season is 10 set in our glorious 2023 campaign (2 June 2023 - 19 August 2023). This year we have already set the second highest with 9 (6 April 2024 - 15 June 2024) and are currently on course to equal the highest with 10 again.
WORST ATTACK - The lowest amount of points scored during a season for Wests Tigers was 352 in the putrid year 2022. Thankfully, we have surpassed that already, however we are certainly on track to record a season where we make the top 10 worst attacking Wests Tigers teams ever....Im guessing we will be 7th or 8th worst.
WORST POINT SCORING AVERAGE - The disgraceful record for the worst attacking average goes to the class of 2022 with a pissant 14.67/game. We wont be worse than that. However, our current rate of 18.33/game is the 8th worst ever with 3 games to go against sides we struggle to score big against.
WORST DEFENCE - The highest amount of points conceeded by the club in a single season is 746 back in 2001. We are currently sitting 6th worst ever with 3 games remaining on 648. They would have to let 99 points in over the next 3 games to be the worst ever....HOWEVER there is a twist in the tale. In 2001 we played 26 games - this mob will play only 24 and get a very similar score. If we discount 2001 for the moment, our worst year (24 games) is 2021 with 714. That means 67 points conceeded in 3 games is well within reach to make this squad the worst comparitively...to be honest, I think 99 is as well which will make them undisputed.
WORST POINT CONCEEDING AVERAGE - This squad currently has the worst average ever at 30.86/game. This can change but with 3 games remaining against good sides who can score lots of points quickly, we will certainly end up very close to, if not the worst ever.
WORST POINTS DIFFERENTIAL - 2022 was such a shit year. It holds the record at -327. The current squad is the 5th worst ever with some expected large losses still to happen. We are sitting at -263 only 64 off being the worst ever.
WORST DISCIPLINE EVER - I cant find enough easy info on this but surely our 15 sinbins, 25 guilty verdicts at the judiciary, $25.6k in fines and 18 weeks of suspensions is right up there?
Whether this year is the worst performing Wests Tigers squad we have put together is debateable, however it must be remembered that we havent had the usual big floggings that happen most seasons where 60-70 points is the losing margin. Weve been consistently poor for the majority of the year - with arguably one of our best sides ever on paper. Lets see how the last 3 games unfold. Should they follow the script written by the team, i.e.scoring low and letting lots in, we may well be looking at some new records to be set by this team in the next month....oh and we will get our third spoon in a row.
