Wally Lewis Never Played In A Top Grade Grand Final?

Yes he did…

1 for Fortitude Valleys Diehards and 3 for Wynnum Manly Seagulls... Some of the Wynnum teams of the mid 80's wouldve belted the NSWRL Premiers!

It was a sad day the Broncos entered the NSWRL... Virtually killed off the BRL.

OK, I meant the NSWRL - ARL - SL - NRL level. Sorry for confusion.

I dont think you can say NSWRL is equal to any ARL/SL/NRL Level competition… The ARL/SL/NRL Comps where all National Competitions, whereas the old NSWRL was simply a glorified Sydney Competition.

So if the history books want the NSWRL classed as a Top Grade Grand Final, so should the BRL, its equal.

The NSWRL Comp still exists today... Same as the BRL. One is called NSW Cup and the other is called Intrust Super Cup, but none of those teams could be classed as 'Top Grade' now.

I'm only making this point as some people in Sydney/NSW think the game only existed down there prior to the Brisbane Broncos.

Even as a Sydneysider I agree with Watto… There were some fine teams who played in the BRL although overall I think it was pretty clear the NSWRL was a stronger competition. It is a shame that one of the consequence of the Broncos coming in was the decline of some great teams. I understand Brothers and Valleys have struggled a bit since then.

Even as NSW's man i was about to make the same point.

The BRL pre '88 was not that far behind NSWRL…. A lot of the best QLDer's still played up there.

By the time ARL came around Wally was nearing the end.

Wally is the second best player Ive seen IMO, only behind Joey, there is a good reason a number of people reckons he is the best he was amazing.

I know you cant compare eras, but the QLDers of the late 80's vs current QLD side would be a great game

Wests Panthers have gone now also… Happy can tell you a few stories about them. Them & Valleys contributed some great names to Australian Teams over the years!

I can remember back in the early '80s when Rugby League Week would give just as much attention to the Queensland competition as the NSWRL.

In the mid week Panasonic Cup competitions Wally captained Combined Brisbane to win in 1984 and then the Broncos to a win in 1989, it's a pity that he left it so late to join the NSWRL comp but he was on huge $$$ to stay loyal to the Brisbane comp.

That was an awesome game, the midweek Panasonic Cup final versus Illawarra….man I wish the game of RL today was as good as what it was back in the late 80's and early 90's :frowning:

it is, every time i watch a game from a by gone era, i realise how much the game has improved…nostalgia does funny things to our memories.

50 bombs a game, the mind-numbing wrestle in every ruck, no shoulder-charges, players barely getting touched and staying down for penalties, no softening-up period, no biff, players laughing their heads off chatting to the opposition after a loss….call me a dinosaur but IMO the game today has gone backwards from yesteryear. Sure players are bigger, stronger, faster and better athletes today but a lot of the actual art that made the game great is gone or disappearing. To me it is all just getting a bit soulless these days where it is just a business moreso than a sport.
Everyone has their own opinion though.
