WESTS TIGERS BEAT PENRITH 42-16 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers recorded a hard fought 42-16 victory over Penrith Panthers tonight at CUA Stadium in round seven of the Toyota Cup premiership.
It was the fifth straight victory for coach Grant Jones and his team who are now firmly entrenched in the top four.
Wests Tigers went into the game without in-form prop Neil Begovich who suffered a minor leg injury during training this week.
Penrith got a repeat set of six in the second minute after full-back Jake Mullaney spilt a bomb. The Panthers took advantage when the ball was spread left through several hands for winger Alan Eisenhuth to score in the corner.
Half-back Matthew Moylan converted the try for a 6-0 lead.
A grubber kick 10 metres out by Moylan saw centre Jake Clarke trapped in-goal in the 10th minute to give the Panthers a repear set. Two plays later, Penrith were awarded a penalty and found the sideline to keep the pressure on. A drop ball on the first tackle saw the pressure valve released.
Wests Tigers opened their account when winger Faleula Finau scored in the corner on the last tackle. It what looked as though nothing was on, half-back Jay Florimo passed to his right with quick hands finding the winger to cross over.
Mullaney converted the try from the sideline for a 6-6 scoreline after 17 minutes.
A poor mis-tackle in defence from a scrum win saw the ball spread right through Moylan who found his winger Andrew Pelasio to score. The try was not converted for a 10-6 scoreline after 21 minutes.
Wests Tigers drew level at 10-10 all when a grubber kick by Florimo saw two Penrith players spill the ball in goal for second-rower Joel Wisbey to score next to the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 12-10 lead after 29 minutes.
From the re-start, Finau spilt the ball over the sideline to give the Panthers the feed 10 metres out. Some good defence kept the Panthers at bay.
Penrith got a repeat set three minutes from half-time when five-eighth Bodie Clarke defused a crossfield kick from full-back Harry Siejka.
The Tigers scrambled well in defence before a loose pass saw the Panthers hand over posession.
Wests Tigers then gave the ball back in the next set to give the home side posession 30 metres out inside the final minute before the break. Fortunately the defence held firm to leave Wests Tigers with a 12-10 lead at half-time.
2nd Half
Penrith had some good opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half but the Wests Tigers defence stood firm.
Wests Tigers extended their lead to 16-10 in the 48th minute when Bodie Clarke delivered a nice cut out pass for centre Jake Clarke to score out wide. It came on the back of a strong run by forward Mason Talolua the previous play in which he was tackled by three defenders just short of the line.
Mullaney converted the try for an 18-10 lead.
Finau almost grabbed his second try when some quick hands to the right through Mullaney and centre Limoni Kamuta saw the final pass ruled forward.
Kamuta was involved in the action again a few minutes later when Florimo and Wisbey combined to send the centre over. Mullaney converted the try from 18 metres out for a 24-10 lead after 61 minutes.
It became 28-10 after 64 minutes when Florimo turned a pass back inside for Mullaney to score under the posts from five metres out. Mullaney converted his own try for a 30-10 lead.
Penrith got back to 30-14 through a try to lock Sam Moylan converted for a 30-16 scoreline.
Wests Tigers then jumped to a 34-16 lead when winger Sama Sauvao scored in the corner after the ball was spread right through several hands. Jake Clarke was hit late as he passed the ball but got up to play on.
Mullaney converted the try for a 36-16 lead with three minutes remaining.
The full-back was in again two minutes later when an inside ball from a scrum win by lock Matt Hyland saw a flying Mullaney take the pass to score near the posts for a 40-16 lead.
Mullaney converted the try for a 42-16 lead which remained the score at full-time.
Mullaney finished with a personal tally of 22 points through two tries and seven goals from seven attempts to move to 98 points for the season after seven rounds. He is the competition's top pointscorer.
