WESTS TIGERS PLAYERS VISIT YOUNG CANCER PATIENTS

Wests Tigers forwards Chris Heighington and Bryce Gibbs may be hard, tough men on the field but off it, they are gentle giants.
The established first grade stars were joined by rising talents Jake Mullaney and new recruit Jacob Miller for a walk around the Oncology Unit at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.
The players spent more than an hour handing out Christmas presents and signing posters to try and brighten the lives of the young patients.
Wests Tigers has formed a charity partnership with the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia for 2011 and beyond.
The partnership will be part of the Club's 'Roar for a Cause' community program and give Wests Tigers players and officials a chance to help young kids with cancer.
Throughout the visit the boys handed out Wests Tigers footballs and teddy bears.
For one very lucky young girl, the boys even performed a rendition of ‘Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer’ which brought a much needed smile to her face.
“As a father, It is heartbreaking to see these children, some even only 6 months old, being struck down by cancerm'' Gibbs said.
"Its great to see the club get behind such a great cause in CCIA and I am looking forward to working with them next year”.
CCIA are positioned at Lowy Cancer Research Centre, UNSW in a purpose built state of the art research centre. The visit gave the boys a chance to experience firsthand the importance of CCIA’s goal to find a cure for childhood cancer.
CCIA has recently opened up the Drug Discovery Centre for Childhood Cancer dedicated to the development of new anticancer drugs.
Wests Tigers partnership with CCIA will hopefully enable the two companies to raise money to facilitate more research to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Keep an eye out for fundraisers and match day partnerships throughout 2011.
