Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah delivers a rev-up to rook

WESTS Tigers captain Robbie Farah can't remember how many combinations the club went through in their key positions last season.

For the record, it was nine different halves pairings and four different fullbacks on the way to missing the finals.

The upheaval cost veteran coach Tim Sheens his job.

As he prepares for his 11th season with the Tigers, Farah has called on the club's next generation of playmakers to stand and deliver.

"I can't even remember how many halves combinations we had last season. You can throw in a handful of fullbacks as well," Farah said.

"The reason Melbourne have been so successful over many years is because they've had stability in those key positions. Other sides like Manly are the same. The halfback job is there for whoever wants it.

"Jacob Miller is obviously going to get first crack and he's been looking good.

"Curtis Sironen is coming back after two shoulder reconstructions but he's going to be putting his hand up.

"And then there's a young kid called Luke Brooks who played SG Ball for Balmain last year and looks a real player of the future.

"So there's a bit of competition there and we need one of these guys to stand up and say I want to direct this team around the park and be the starting halfback.

"The same goes with fullback. It's up to either Tim Moltzen or James Tedesco to try to make the jersey their own."

Last season, the Tigers were forced to experiment with Blake Ayshford, Chris Lawrence, Moltzen, Benji Marshall, Sironen, Miller, Tom Humble and Liam Fulton in the halves.

Even Farah, who cemented himself as the NSW Origin hooker, spent some time there during an injury crisis.

Fullback was the same, with rookie Tedesco injuring his knee in round one against Cronulla before Humble, Beau Ryan and Moltzen were all shuffled in and out.

This year, Farah reasons the arrival of experienced lock Braith Anasta will provide the stabilising influence the Tigers need in terms of better on-field direction.

"There'll be aspects of our game that will stay the same. When you've got players like myself and Benji that like to back ourselves, then we're always going to have a little bit of flair," Farah said.

"But, for us, it's going to be about picking our moments and getting the balance right.

"The Tigers play well when we do that and when we're not doing that we struggle.

"That's probably why we've been a bit inconsistent last year because we struggled to find that balance.

"With Braith coming in you can already start to see the impact he's had on us on the training paddock. We're mixing up the flair with the hard work."

For Farah, this year shapes as arguably the most important of his decorated career, with the NSW Origin hooker and Kangaroo utility off contract at the club.

The Tigers are desperate to retain the skipper and recently tabled him a three-year offer designed to keep him at Concord, a deal which would keep him at the club for the duration of his career.

But, as always with big-name players, there is no shortage of rival clubs circling.

"Until the collective bargaining agreement gets sorted it's a bit of a tricky one," Farah said.

"I'd like to get it sorted sooner rather than later, but at the moment I'll leave it with my manager."

You can tell Farah was far from happy with Sheen's idiotic selections last year,we now are in a better position to re-sign Robbie than we were 6 months ago.

That is assuming that Sheens was the problem

If the team replicates it's performances of 2012 Farah won't be happy

IMO it all depends on Coach Potter and the direction the Tigers are moving towards. Sheens had lost the plot and Farah as with others had a gut full …thats why he got fired simple he stays many leave! :sign:

I agree Snake , but if things don't change in 2013 Farah really has to think about his future especially if he wants another premiership To change a side and its style can take a few years

As Farah states, players like he and Benji play what they see in front of them and like to play with a bit of flair, so I think we'll still see some slick ball movement and attacking plays among the team. Potter himself has said he's not looking to change much in the way the Tigers play, but what I think will be different is in respect to working the ball out of the Tigers own half. Potter knows the Tigers lacked grunt when working it up the guts. Aside from Woods and Galloway who consistently get over the advantage line, things really went downhill once both players were having a breather on the sideline.

I sense that Potter will be drumming into the team, to play percentage football inside their own half and for the forwards to roll their sleeves up and don't be afraid to get into an arm wrestle. I believe with most of the squad bulking up, it tends to support this theory. Obviously if the opposition are caught at sixes and sevens for whatever reason, Farah and Marshall will have free reign, but otherwise I think we'll see a more direct, no-nonsense approach from the Tigers. Play the set out, get a good clearing kick in and chase hard. I think Anasta's experience will help in this regard as he also has good vision and a good football brain, hopefully it takes some pressure off Benji and Robbie, plus Miller also has a kicking game, so there's another option. What I hope it provides, is more time for Robbie and Benji to sum things up before they decide to chance their hand with a low percentage play, which we saw a lot of last year.

Not too much longer to wait and find out now…

I've been told (admittedly third hand) that Farah is wanting absolute top dollar for his next contract and will leave if someone else offers betters dollars then us.

Understandable as this will probably be his last chance to get a contract as an absolute top line player.

Thats fine, Robbie should be the tigers highest paid player.

Hopefully Robbie Farah stays for life with the tigers best hooker in the world i think we will have a great spine in 2013 season no more shifting players out of position.

I agree he should be our highest paid player, but that doesn't mean he should be holding the club to ransom. If the club make a good offer to him and he goes somewhere else simply over money I'd be filthy with him as a Tigers fan. He has gone on about loyalty to the club for a long time and I think this contract negotiation will be very telling about that. As club captain, it would be wrong of him (in my opinion) to drag a long contract problem out in the media over the season, particularly when he has been very critical of that in our club in the last couple of years. Don't get me wrong, I hope to god that he stays with us, but I also hope that we aren't left in a position where we can't use the salary cap increase to further strengthen our roster because Robbie wants megabucks and plenty of bonuses as well.

Everyones idea of ''a good offer'' may be very different, especially when its someone elses ''good offer''….and not your own

Interesting observations on the Farah re signing… I certainly would like him to stay but not at any expense , the club has to still invest in a few positions mainly front row stocks...So bottom line is he certainly is worth top $$$$ but at his age ect if someone wants to give him massive overs good luck to him it's a team sport and the Tigers certainly have to go into the market to boost there stocks.

I want Farah to stay, but we can't waste all our cap increase on him,Cherrington is develping nicely if Robbie heads to the Eels.
We need to make a fair offer and move on,we are in a far better position to win a premiership in the next 3 years than the Eels are.
Look what happened to Prince who chased the dollars at the coast,he won nothing and got pushed out the door.

If Farah wants to win a premiership in the near future he will stay with Wests Tigers the team which has respected him, which he is captain and which he has spilt his blood for.

No doubt he's the highest priority to re-sign but he has been as inconsistent as anyone over the years. Great year last year but we need that again.

I have so much respect for Farah, but no individual is bigger than the club. If he demands too much money, and isn't giving value for that money, we are better off without him. Hopefully it won't come to that!

He will arguably be the best player off contract in the NRL in 2013

We will have to pay overs both in amount of money and for how long we sign him to keep him

This will possibly be his last major contract he signs in his career

Some clubs will offer ridiculous amounts of money to sign him

What would we do if we lost him , honestly . Just think how this team functions without him 😱pen_mouth:

We have to sign him , no questions asked
