Wests Tigers v Storm
Leichhardt Oval
Sunday 2pm
>
Is anyone going to give the Wests Tigers their just desserts, or are most pundits going to keep expecting them to falter?
>
You might not realise it but this Wests Tigers unit is running third and still have a chance of wrestling the minor premiership away from the Dragons, Titans or Panthers.
>
They once again got the job done against Parramatta last weekend and they have high expectations going forward.
>
They want a home final – and they know that means they need to take down the Storm here at their own version of the ‘graveyard’.
>
As the last regular season home game for the Tigers, and definitely the last game at Leichhardt Oval for the year, this represents a chance for the fans to pack the place out and keep the hoodoo over the Storm alive.
>
The home side have won five of six encounters against Melbourne at Leichhardt and will be pushing to make it six from seven in an effort to potentially take second spot on the ladder.
>
A loss, on the other hand, could see them drop back to fourth and put them under pressure to remain in the top four with a last-round match against the Titans.
>
Wade McKinnon returns at fullback, forcing Mitch Brown to the bench in the only change from the side that held on against the Eels.
>
The Storm are just trying to get through the season and should be commended for their attitude since the salary cap news broke. Rather than pack it in and go through the motions they have continued to play and would be pushing for a top-four berth themselves if all things were equal.
>
Storm skipper Cameron Smith needs six more points to reach 1000 points in the NRL and would become the first Melbourne player to reach this milestone.
>
Brett Finch rejoins the side at five-eighth, which sees Luke Kelly miss out, while Sika Manu has been named in the centres, pushing Todd Lowrie back to the bench.
>
Brett White will start at prop, meaning Bryan Norrie goes to the bench, while Ryan Hoffman and Kevin Proctor will start in the back row with Ryan Hinchcliffe reverting to the reserves. Jesse Bromwich comes onto the bench for Sione Kite.
>
Watch out Wests Tigers: One player really trying to hone his skills in readiness for next season is winger/centre Dane Nielsen. While in the shadows of his centre team-mate Inglis, Neilsen looks a real prospect for the Storm going forward and must be shown respect by the Tigers in this encounter.
>
He averages 81 metres a match, something he is looking to lift, but with 10 line-breaks, eight tries and 62 tackle-breaks he has shown himself to be somewhat elusive. If the Storm can get him quality ball early he could force the home side to be chasing points from the get go.
>
Watch out Storm: Wade McKinnon returns desperate to get into some form leading into the finals. The fullback who transferred mid-season from the Warriors is still yet to score a try this season, and does not want to be stuck on the ‘nude run’ as he can’t even claim a Warriors try (he was try less there also).
>
In his five matches at the Tigers he has averaged 154 metres gained and has two line-breaks, two line-break assists, four offloads and 19 tackle-breaks. His best performances comes when he supports ball runners so look for him to be sniffing around the big props and also running inside lines for Benji Marshall.
>
Where it will be won: Attitude and application. The Wests Tigers players have been telling all and sundry they have the goods to go all the way and they are determined to prove detractors wrong.
>
They have done a good job so far but now they face a side they are expected to beat but a side that still have some big name stars. Will they turn up as committed this week?
>
If they fail to do so, the likes of Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith would love nothing more than to put them in their place. As has been the case for the Storm for most of the season, their commitment to the game will also be paramount to their performance. They haven’t really liked travelling to Leichhardt and its outdated facilities and while they have been great for most of the year, this match shapes up as one where they could be off the pace. The same thing happened at Brookvale a few weeks ago.
>
The side that is actually committed to getting the job done will get the result and leave Leichhardt with some momentum into the last round of the year.
>
The history: Played 18; Wests Tigers 6, Storm 12\. The Wests Tigers may have only won six games against the Storm but five of them have been at Leichhardt Oval, the venue for this game. The Storm have only beaten the Tigers once at this ground.
>
The past four games have gone win-loss in this match-up, and since the Storm won the last encounter if the trend continues it points to a Wests Tigers win.
>
Conclusion: The Leichhardt hoodoo should continue as long as the Wests Tigers turn up in the right frame of mind. They have plenty of motivation to win and also need to continue their momentum into a big last-round clash with the Titans… and then finals football.
>
Melbourne will give them a run for a while but if the Wests Tigers are ready to play, they should win.

"They have done a good job so far but now they face a side they are expected to beat but a side that still have some big name stars. Will they turn up as committed this week?"

Really?

Wests Tigers will run over the top of the storm this week, they have a lot to play for and are in the right frame of mind.

I was feeling good until I read the following

Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm, Leichhardt Oval, Sunday 2pm (EST)
Wests Tigers will be too good for Melbourne Storm. I expect the Storm to be looking more towards theirs last home game at AAMI Park in round 26 - they will probably just go through the motions. The Tigers have been playing some great, attractive football on a Sunday afternoon. Full of confidence, I expect them to win well and further build their confidence heading into the finals.

Daley tipping against us is a good thing normally

Tigers will aim up this week and in front of a full house they'll take care of the Storm.

The bandwagon is slowly picking up speed I see…

Preview: Wests Tigers v Storm

VENUE & TIME: Leichhardt Oval, Sunday, August 29, 2.00pm (AEST)
COVERAGE: Fox Sports
HEAD TO HEADPlayed 18, Storm 12, Tigers 6
LAST TIME: Storm 14 – Tigers 12 at Olympic Park, Round 15, 2009

WALKING WOUNDED: Full-back Wade McKinnon hasn't played since Round 19 due to a nagging hamstring injury, but he has been named to take his place for the Tigers on Sunday, moving Mitch Brown to the bench. Don't be surprised to see prop Bryce Gibbs make an early return from a knee injury, despite not being named. Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy has re-called youngster Jesse Bromwich and rushed back Wigan-bound five-eighth Brett Finch from a hand injury in the only changes to the Storm's line-up this week. Luke Kelly and Sione Kite are the two players relegated. Winger Matt Duffie will not play again this season due to a knee injury.

FORM: The Tigers went another step closer to securing a top-four spot when they fought off a late challenge by the Eels last Sunday. They were in control for much of the match and their scrambling defence had a real finals' feel about it, until the final 10 or so minutes when the Eels got on a roll. The difference between the Tigers of this year and the Tigers of previous seasons is the fact that the current mob are winning the close ones and it's showing on the ladder. Melbourne secured a fifth-straight home win on Saturday night when they easily accounted for the Sharks 24-4 in a dour match at AAMI Park. With nothing to play for, the Storm continue to win at home and struggle on the road.

WHO'S HOT: Tigers skipper Robbie Farah is hitting peak form heading into the finals and he was on song once again at Parramatta Stadium last Sunday, laying on two tries and generally creating havoc out of the dummy-half area. Farah's clash with Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith will be worth the price of admission alone on Sunday, considering the Australian No.9 was equally as dominant in his match against Cronulla last week.

WE THINK: The Tigers at Leichhardt are an irresistible proposition here, especially when the Storm's inability to fire away from home this season is taken into account. Their most recent clash on the road was against Manly in Round 22 and it wasn't pretty, in fact key players such as Billy Slater looked barely interested. If the Tigers keep it simple then they should confirm their fifth successive victory at Leichhardt, and with that, a top-four position. Some big plans are in place for Melbourne's final home game next week and most of their players will be setting themselves for that one. It's been one tough year for the Storm boys. Tigers by 12.

spot on smeg, daley doesn't know s… from clay !

must admit bit nervous about this one.
wests-tigers need to compete very well to win this.
do not think it will be easy game, otherwise the result at game end will be embarrassing.
shut down storm play makers.
get up and in their face.
whilst storm do not get points for a win, they can still hurt wests-tigers point for/against.

Simple equation.
If the Tigers play this at finals intensity, we should come away with it.
We go out thinking we've got the game because 'the Storm won't be interested' we'll get blown away.

August 26, 2010 - 4:07PM

Sunday, Leichhardt Oval, 2pm
Referees: Gavin Badger, Alan Shortall
Head to head: Storm 12, Tigers 6
Last clash: Storm 14 bt Tigers 12 at Olympic Park (rd 15 2009)
TAB SportsBet: Tigers $1.47, Storm $2.65
FootyTab: Storm +5.5

The third-placed Tigers remain in the running for a valuable top-two spot with two rounds to go, so they have an enormous amount to play for here. They have won their last two games and six of their last eight to give themselves some genuine momentum as the finals approach. Some of those wins were scrappy, but in the last two weeks they have thrashed the Panthers and fought hard to hang on and narrowly beat the Eels. The win over the Eels may have been the more impressive, because it was more like a finals game.

The Storm are coming to the end of easily the most tumultuous season in the club's history. Among the heavy penalties they received for cheating the salary cap was to be barred from collecting competition points this season. If they were playing for points, they would be in fifth place and gearing up for the finals. The Storm have mostly been able to keep aiming up despite their situation, but when they have struggled to find motivation it has mostly been in away games. A big Leichhardt crowd will no doubt rev the Tigers right up.
