Why do people think...

That when you wear a footy jersey out somewhere in public e.g - down the shops, they have automatic right to sledge your team, or just generally be a pest about it?

Case in point -

Took my kids down the shops today, (yay for holidays) both under 5, and had them in each hand, both of them dragging me towards ANOTHER toy outlet.

Out of nowhere I hear an older voice say to me - _"Mate they won't beat the Eagles on Friday"_

I look up and an older bloke gives me this cheeky look, and it takes me a sec to realize I have my jersey on.

I kindly explain to him that his point is invalid _"No they wont. Mate - Tigers by 12\. You heard it here first."_ and I kept walking.

He now kind of starts to follow saying something about Marshall needing to do something, and Manly winning (mind you I have NEVER seen this guy in my life ever) and I kindly remind him that the NZ Captain will have a blinder, then he rambles something about Parramatta getting up this week. Without breaking my stride, now with me dragging my kids towards the toy shops I say _"Now there's a team who's gone"_ and he finally left me alone.

I've had it happen before at the shops, when we played the Melbourne Storm, one idiot came up and said, _"Go the Storm!"_ with his mates around him, and I said, _"We beat the Storm last week, idiot."_ His mates cracked up at the fail of his statement.

Despite the Hilarity of the Storm fail, and this old codger bugging me and my kids, it annoys me that people think they have licence to just say stuff in public like that.

Imagine walking past a construction site, and saying "Mate, you lay bricks as well as I lay your wife!" and see what happened there, betcha the brickie won't just cop that with a smile.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has had people do silly stuff like that, (of course not counting when you actually go to the footy, or to a pub to watch the game, but yknow, just down the shops or something)

your pretty much screaming TIGERS to everyone you walk past by wearing the jersey… so i personally think its naieve to think no one will say anything..

banter against a sporting team vs telling soemone you laid their wife… you cant even compare the 2...

not trying to be a prick but if you dont like the attention you get wearing a jersey - simply dont wear it next time..

Im the opposite, i love a bit of banter from people on the street. Awesome wearing the wests tigers jacket to work on a Monday after the tigers won on the weekend. Not so fun after a loss but you just roll with the punches.
As long as they are not over the top aggressive or rude then i don't see the drama.

The thing is, if someone walks past in a billabong shirt, you don't strike up conversation about Surfing, or attempt to sledge them by saying "Rip Curl is better bro!" It's just poor form.

Also think I got a little bit pissier at it because I had the rug rats with me, and the temper had been already tested somewhat… But still, My local gets an unhealthy amount of Roosters, Raiders, and Rabbitohs jerseys, and I don't walk past them and say anything.

Maybe its just me.

Nothing better that seeing another luminous orange figure heading your way, and giving them a knowing smile.

I'll never forget the time I was heckled by some surfie peanut in Cronulla in front of his mates in 2009…

I was obviously wearing the gang colours for him to notice me and to not so articulately point out that the Tigers were an awful team. I thoughtfully reminded him that his club had in fact been belted 30-0 (by a Parramatta side just finding their form after a shocking start to the season,) the weekend before and politely pointed out the only thing that the Sharks are good at are winning are donuts (being kept scoreless,) and wooden spoon. I can only imagine I had hit a nerve as I was told to move on before I had my head kicked in.

now your comparing clothing labels with sporting teams.

i wear my heart (which is black and gold ) on my sleeve .Livin in newcastle i hear it all, let them bring it i hack on people for a livin at work and enjoy the challenge

unless the guy was being disrespectful and offensive whats the big deal?
it comes across a little precious that you would get annoyed over what appeared to be light-hearted banter

Living in a Qld/Bronco mad region of Queensland, if I'm wearing my Tigers Gear the comments usually come thick and fast… The same goes for the boys when we are out and about, they will also get a the odd heckle... I just laugh it off.

If they continue or more so continue annoying the boys, I'll just tell them to P off.... Most understand

I have to say that these people are f**etc. I'm the opposite to you though, I'd just go "TIGER'S REP" back to them and tell them to…(whatever they deserve)

I think it depends where you live and what you wear with the jersey. I love throwing on the leather pants wearing my Wests Tigers jersey to the local, I get so many cat calls and free cocktails its embarrassing.

This one isn't a footy jumper story but fits in just as well. In my cupboards I only have tigers gear and band shirts. I was at the Big Day Out one year wearing a Pearl Jam shirt with the picture of a dump truck on the front of it. This drunk yobbo come walking towards me, with all his yobbo mates, points at me and says "er er er dump truck". my response; "er er er dumb f**k" never seen a guy laughed at so hard by his own mates. Moral of the story, just shut them up by outsmarting them

i love the banter that OP is talking about. No idea why he found it annoying.

I will have a friendly convo with any other league supporter and will give as much as i get. If they get annoying (overly agressive or just plain crazy) I just say GL next weekend and move on. No harm done.

damn your semantics!!!

Point i'm trying to make is you don't just walk up to random stranger and comment on or about their apparel, unless you have something nice to say. Healthy debate i'm fine with (as you can see here :smiley🙂 however with two little ones in tow? No thanks.

Friendly banter i'm cool with. Discussing with a non believer why the tigers are the real deal is no worries. If he had caught me at the food court, I probably would have had no issue with it..

It's the snide commenting while walking past, then following me and my kids continuing a diatribe that irked me.

You replied to him….that gives him an excuse to continue. If you dont want any of it, dont reply.

Rarely cop this myself as Ive generally lived in our home districts for most part

and that is checkmate.

You have me there, ink.

It is ok if you make a joke about it to a degree .Give you example hwen some one comes up to counter to pay for something whos is wearing another team jersey I will say something smart like "charge him double he is a Bulldogs supporter " and have a bit of friendly banter . But you gotta be careful I got unlucky with a Tigers supporter about a year ago . Started talking to him about Tigers when he came in and this bloke is a pisshead (unknown to me at time ) Now he comes in all the time ranting and raving and wanting to talk to me and I'm ducking and diving trying to avoid this nutter

I've had other tigers fans come up to me and say stuff like GO THE TIGERS or some thing bout the game but never any one sledging me about players or the other team we are playing but why would they I'm 6 foot 5 and 115kg
