Why I hate the McIntyre finals system

Thought I should get in now, before I get accused of raising this after the fact.

I do not like the NRL McIntyre system. I think how you progress or fail in the finals should be determined by your performance and your performance only. Other results should have no effect on you.
I hate the fact that if teams 7 and 8 lose, then team 5 and 6 could get beat by 50 and still progress to week 2.

end of rant. everything else from me this week will be positive. Yay. finals footy again!!!

well how many teams should be knocked out of the finals after week 1

Its the only way an 8 team series can function without chopping it in half after week I

All about the $$$$$

i like the afl system 1v4 2v3 for the gf qualifier 5v8 and 6v7 elimination finals. its the best teams fighting it out for the top spots and the teams that just scraped in fighting for survival. iits more logical and fairer imo

but why shouldnt it be better to finish 5th or 6th instead of 7th and 8th

well under this system you can be eliminated in 5th or 6th anyways, its just prolonging the inevitable.

yeah you could be eliminated week 1 but if you finish 5th or 6th and lose week 1 you still have a chance to win the premiership. i dont like top 5 - i prefer top 8 how it is now.

I prefer the AFL system.

You control your own destiny, if you win, you survive or get a week off, if you lose you get punished by having to play the next week of get eliminated.

With the NRL system, if results go the way as expected, then all that happens for week 2 is the matchups get swapped around.

Look at 05, 1st (Parra) and 2nd (St George) won in the first week, so straight away 8th (Manly) and 7th (Cronulla) were eliminated. That meant that, despite 4th (WT) and 6th (Melbourne) winning their finals matches and 5th (Nth Qld) and 3rd (Brisbane) losing, those 4 teams still played the next week with the Tigers _reward_ being a semi against 3rd, meanwhile the team that lost by 50 plays the team that finished 6th.

Its stupid.

Personally I prefer the NRL finals. The teams that come 5-8 never get anywhere in the AFL finals. Also you can finish 3rd and potentially have an away game in Perth and then have to back up and play in Melbourne the next week if you lose.

Neither system is perfect though.

i agree no top 5 keep the 8.
IMO if you cant beat 7th or 8th you don't deserve to be there.

But thats the whole idea of finishing as high as possible.
The higher you finish, the more reward you get and the greater chance you have of playing in the Grand Final.

Thats a good point you make about the travel but the AFL don't schedule/decide on when the game for the following week is played until after the previous rd of finals has been played, this is so they can take into consideration the teams that have had to travel.

Eg If Geelong plays on a Saturday night, and they play in Perth the next week, the AFL will schedule a Sunday final.
On the other hand if Geelong plays on a Saturday night and they play a Melbourne side next week, then the AFL is more likely to schedule that game for a Friday/Saturday night instead.

I don't think the AFL system awards the top 4 enough. 1v4 isn't a really big advantage for team 1, nor is 2v3 for team 2\. Also, for teams 3 and 4, they get a top 2 team away, which will be a tough game, then they have to back up (if they lose) in a knock out game against 5/6, and they will be there for the taking.

It just shows the strength of the NRL comp that 1 is seriously worried about who will be finishing 8th. This is the same through the the table.

i think all you people who favour the nrl system will soon change your mind if we finish 3rd and teams 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th all win - in a comp as close as this its possible this could happen - so our reward for finishing 3rd would be completely nullified.

So…you want a reward for us losing?

No i want a reward for finishing in the top 4 - under the afl system if you finish in the top 4 you can't be eliminated in week 1- also if what i suggested happens teams 1 and 2 are rewarded for losing or should they be booted as well in week 1

There is a reward for top 4…..its just we dont use it.
Its called the home ground advantage...or ''home semi''
