Wing coach

Do we need a wing coach?

This is in response to the idea of a halves coach. The idea of getting a position coach is to get the most out of the position. So a halves coach would turn our halves from average/poor (Brooks) into better and help them gell together. The idea is to get the halves steering the team right and getting good ball to wingers/centers/anyone to get them across the line.

So why not a winger coach. Get someone who trains the wingers to either get across the line or get good ball to their centers/backs. Also to work on end defense.

I am thinking Pat Richards.

Why? because he was a winger who could get great ball inside and get over the line OR get his center over the line. He was almost going to be picked for Origin. If he could impart his skills on the next wingers coming through then you can have your conventional attack through Brooks/Reynolds passing it outside and then have your unconventional attack through Nofo and Founa passing it in. I.e. we develop an alternative plan when the conventional route does not work.

Halves coach yes - if you could get Johns or Fittler.

A wing coach is the silliest idea I have ever heard - The NRL game has gone passed Pat Richards.
How many times have you seen Pat Richards score tries like Nofo - Let alone good wingers from other clubs?

As far as passing back in etc. It is backing up - which every player in the team should be doing if they are near the movement, same as the Storm players do. That is not rocket science, but far few teams do it.

Heard this from Blocker a long time ago: "Why do wingers score so many tries? Because they are marked by other wingers."
Sorry.

No offence but the title made me LOL… then I saw it was a serious thread.

Wing play is very different these last few years to what it was... But specialist coaching in this position probably not on though we can use all the help we can get

I am sure Warren Ryan told him that one i can remember Warren saying it back in the days he was coaching Newtown.Have no idea who gave it to him

Yep, it would be an old one. Front towers find it amusing as they score so few tries. Had to do the end of season run a few times back in the day.

It isnt so silly.
I have always been of the mindset that wingers are the players who hang around with footballers and for good reason…they are so different to every other player on the field in terms of what they offer and their skillset. In today's game, wingers are close to the most important players on the field.

Think about what they do...
They take dirty dummy half hitups in their own 20.
They defend large expanses of the field against tactical clearance kicking
They defuse bombs
They score tries no one else on the field is capable of
They mark other wingers...usually big bodied guys with speed to burn
They fly through the air and catch attacking kicks from their playmakers
Most of them have great ballhandling skills possessing an ability to pass the ball or kick it whilst off balance or at top speed.
They are cover defenders when opposition breaks are made
They are support players for when their team makes breaks

Point being, some sides have wingers who tick all boxes whilst others struggle. Having kickass wingers is a big asset and it has been for 2 decades now. Our club doesnt put much stock into winger selection. Its a very old school approach.

It's not that serious. OK a little serious a little looking at cloning Pat Richards.

What I am saying though is this. We get a halves coach. Melbourne gets a halves coach. Everyone gets a halves coach. Easts gets Freddy Fitler and Taylor, Manly or Knights get Johns. We got Kimmorley between media appearances.

How are we going to beat other teams?

I see our attack and platform and we do poorly what others do well. We need to do the right things right, we need to defend, we need to complete sets and we need to move the ball up field.

But if we just pass to our Halfback and say "come up with something clever this time", I fear we will be dead in the water. Brooks is the best we can get for now, but even if we had JT, if we don't have a plan B then our key player gets marked and our attack frustrated.

I think most positions should have a specific coach. I'm sure they do this in the NFL.

I suppose the problem is there is nowhere near as much money available to clubs in the NRL.

If you believe that bum Anasta, we can't even afford strapping for players.

Whether or not we need one is a moot point because we cannot afford a coach for each position. We're not like the rich clubs (Storm, Roosters, Broncos etc) that have coaches, nutritionists, physios etc coming out of their ears

Wing coach KPIs

- increase bum taps for dropped balls by 27%
- run an advanced voluntary tackle class at least once a month (fullbacks can attend too)
- reduce lag between try and high 5 by 3 seconds

Any others?

What's Richards going to say to Naiquama or Noffa? 'Well see the trick is to be a big unit like me and just force your way over. Oh you're 5'3", yeah I can't help you.'

Clubs have hired coaches from the AFL before to help Wingers catch the ball etc, but old school RL heads tend to quickly trash the idea. Defence is a motion which is created from the middle. If your wingers are continually coming in, its basically because they have no choice but to come in. [there are some circumstances when its simply a bad habit] NRL Wingers are usually Centres/Fullbacks from the junior ranks, so they tend to have a good understanding of the numbers game in defense and how/when to follow-up, cut in, power through to the line or set up inside/outside players.

Personally, its pretty clear they are at the end of most movements and if you cant get it right in the middle of the park, why waste money on hiring coaches for the 'what if'?

Maybe a stronger investment in a Defensive Coach is the starting point… Its only a guess though?!

Hahaha…this is the sort of old school thinking i was talking about. Wingers used to be hangers on to the rest of the side, they are now at the pointy end of a teams success.

If we have limited funds. Should we get a halves coach, and a forwards coach like everyone else is doing and be outclassed in trying to copy them?

Ofcourse we need to have our forwards moving forward, ofcourse we need co-ordinated defense.

Every club seems to be throwing everything at their halves. I heard Adam Reynolds say on the weekend "ofcourse when you loose, the halfback is the one that gets blamed". Why do we trust the halfback to do the "magic kick" for whatever winger or center they find… all the time.

I think this is why Manly and Easts have succeeded. They have dangerous halfbacks and very dangerous centers and wingers, they can test the line at different areas and come up with the points.

What about a utility coach?

Do we need a coach to coach the coach?

maybe… Mr 47% could definitely do with a hand to increase those stats.

I'd like to see how Cleary goes with recruitment in the coaching ranks though. There was a murmur a while ago Fairleigh would be with us next year, but havnt heard anything for a while.

Been asking for a while, but Peter Ryan is the man we need to tighten up our middle!
